JAMMU AND KASHMIR Glowing Tributes Paid to Late Abdul Gani Hafiz

IN a condolence meeting organised in Srinagar on December 21, the state committee of CPI(M) remembered one of its senior leaders and social activist, Abdul Gani Hafiz. The speakers highlighted the personal qualities, contribution and the principled behaviour of late Hafiz. His journalistic abilities, intellectual potential and strong desire for exploitation free and just society were mentioned in detail with an assertion that his life will inspire the young revolutionaries and guide them to the path of politics which is based on ideology and the collective good of humanity.

Tributes Paid to Comrades Ananda Pathak and Arati Dasgupta

RICH tributes were paid to Comrade Ananda Pathak and Comrade Arati Dasguta, frontline leaders of working class movement and CPI(M), in a condolence meeting on December 29 at Kolkata. Both of them breathed their last on November 28.

The meeting, presided over by Biman Basu particularly remembered their contribution to the development of working class movement in the state. Dipak Dasgupta, CITU state secretary and Ashok Bhattacharya, state committee member of the Party outlined the lifelong struggle of these veteran leaders.

Comrade P R Menon

VETERAN leader of the railway workers of India, former general secretary and president of the National Railway Mazdoor Union (NRMU), former vice president of the All India Railwaymen’s Federation (AIRF), one of the senior most members of the CPI(M) Maharashtra state committee and chairman of the Comrade B T Ranadive Memorial Trust, Comrade P R Menon passed away in Mumbai at the age of 81 on December 5, 2014.

Justice VR Krishna Iyer

Prakash Karat, general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement on December 4, 2014
I AM deeply saddened at the passing away of Justice VR Krishna Iyer. Krishna Iyer was a visionary jurist, statesman and champion of human rights. Elected as an independent, he became the law minister in the first Communist ministry in Kerala in 1957. As a Supreme Court judge, he gave several landmark judgements which interpreted the rights of citizens under the constitution favouring the common man.

Homage to Benoy Konar

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement on September 15:

THE Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) expresses its deep grief at the passing away of Comrade Benoy Konar, a senior leader of the Party and the peasant movement. He died on September 14 at the age of 84.

BIPAN CHANDRA (1928-2014)

BIPAN Chandra, one of India’s leading historians and an uncompromising defender of secularism and the scientific spirit, passed away in the early hours of August 30, 2014. His death was widely reported both in the newspapers and the electronic media, where there were also a spate of obituaries and commemorative commentaries. This is how, indeed, it should have been because Bipan Chandra’s death has been a great loss not only to the academic community but to the thinking part of our nation.

Condolence Meeting for Com Vijender Sharma Held

WITH a resolve to carry on Comrade Vijender Sharma’s unfulfilled tasks, a condolence meeting on August 14 paid homage to the departed comrade. Hundreds of Party workers, members of the intelligentsia, Delhi University teachers participated in the meeting held at the Constitution Club in New Delhi. The meeting adopted a condolence resolution moved by the Delhi state committee secretary PMS Grewal. K M Tiwari conducted the proceedings.

Comrade Vijender Sharma

COMRADE Vijender Sharma, secretariat member of the CPI(M) Delhi state committee and veteran leader of the university and college teachers’ movement passed away on August 9, 2014 after bravely battling cancer for over eight months. He was 63. His demise is an irreparable loss to both the Party and the university and college teachers’ movement.

Comrade Chitta Chanda Is No More

EMINENT freedom fighter, permanent invitee member of CPI(M) Tripura state committee and former chairman of the Party’s state control commission, Comrade Chitta Chanda passed away at 5.40pm on July 28 at Agartala Government Medical College Hospital. He was 95. He was a bachelor. Comrade Chitta Chanda was suffering from age related diseases for quite some time. He was admitted to the hospital in the night of July 20. CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Manik Sarkar, CPI(M) state secretary Bijan Dhar and other secretariat members regularly visited the hospital for the updates on his condition.
