Javeed Alam

EMINENT Scholar Prof. Javeed Alam who had been associated with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) from 1970 onwards, passed away in the early hours of December 5, 2016 after a brief illness. Born in 1943 in Hyderabad he came from a family which was deeply involved in the Telangana armed struggle led by the Communist Party against the feudal oppression of the Nizam and for land distribution to the peasantry.After studying in Osmania University he had come to Delhi in 1966 to pursue his PhD.

N A Sawant, A Communist Functionary of Indomitable Will Power

COMRADE Narayan Atmaram Sawant who expired on September 29 at village Nigude, Sawantwadi Taluka in Maharashtra was a veteran leader of news paper employees in Maharashtra. He was 82 and one of the leading functionaries in the founding of the CPI(M) and the CITU in Maharashtra. Though trade union field was his main activity, Sawant was equally active in the political front of the undivided CPI as well as of the AITUC. From late 50s to 1980s, he was residing at Prabhadevi in Mumbai and thereafter in Belapur near B T Ranadive Bhavan.

H Kanhailal: Protagonist of ‘Theatre of the Earth’

INTERNATIONALLY acclaimed dramatist and protagonist of ‘Theatre of the Earth’ Heisnam Kanhailal died on October 6 in his famous drama institute Kalakshetra in the outskirts of Imphal, Manipur. He was 75 and had been suffering from cancer. He was a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). He is survived by his wife Heisnam Sabitri and son Tomba.  Kanhailal was born on January 17, 1941 into a poor family at Keisamthong Thangajam, Leirak, Imphal. His father H Pishak Singh was a follower of legendary Communist leader Hizam Irabat Singh.

Comrade V V DakshinamoorthiCPI(M) Kerala state secretariat member and former chief editor of Deshabhimani, Comrade V V Dakshinamoorthi passed away on August 30. 82 year old Dakshinamoorthi was under treatment at Kozhikode District Co-operative Hospital in Calicut for lung cancer. Comrade Dakshinamoorthi, an eminent parliamentarian and an excellent orator has been in the forefront of teachers’ movement in its founding years.

Comrade Romesh Chandra is No More

COMRADE Romesh Chandra, former president of World Peace Council died in Mumbai in the afternoon of July 4, 2016.Comrade Romesh Chandra joined the freedom struggle as a student leader. Later he became the member of Communist Party. He was a member of the National Executive of the CPI. For a period, he was also the editor of New Age, central organ of CPI.Comrade Romesh Chandra all through his life was active in the peace moment.

Comrade Mohammed Nizamuddin

THE secretariat of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) expressed its profound grief at the passing away of Comrade Mohammed Nizamuddin, veteran trade union leader from West Bengal, general secretary of the All India Beedi Workers’ Federation and a member of the all India working committee of CITU. He passed away in Kolkata on June 21, 2016 at the age of 83.

CPI(M) Condoles the Death of Comrade Kanti Biswas

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement on April 28, 2016THE Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) deeply mourns the death of Comrade Kanti Biswas, a veteran Communist leader,   chairman of the West Bengal CPI(M) state control commission, who expired on the night of April 27 after a month’s treatment in a hospital in Kolkata. He was 84 years old. Comrade Biswas was born in a poor peasant family of Faridpur in undivided Bengal.

Comrade Ashok Ghosh

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement on March 3.THE Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) expresses its profound sorrow at the death of Comrade Ashok Ghosh, veteran leader of the All India Forward Bloc.Comrade Ashok Ghosh, inspired by Subhas Chandra Bose, joined the freedom movement at a young age. He had participated in the Quit India movement. He headed the West Bengal unit of the Forward Bloc since 1952.
