AP: ASHA Workers Demand Release of Pending Wages

THOUSANDS of Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA workers) staged a sit-in dharna at Vijayawada on August 26 demanding release of their wages that are pending for the last eight months. They also opposed the grading system introduced recently by the government intending to harass them and is a threat to their job security. Police detained many ASHA workers in their respective districts from 25th itself. Family members of ASHAs also were taken into custody at some places. In spite of repression, thousands of workers reached the dharna chowk at Vijayawada from early hours of 26th.

MAHARASHTRA FLOODS: Callous Govt Exacerbates Tragedy

WHAT the first fortnight of August this year brought to a population of over a crore of people in the three districts of Southern Maharashtra – Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara was a deadly combination of nature’s wrath and the criminally insensitive attitude of a callous state government. This area, which has to its west the Western Ghats, experienced, once again, unprecedented rains. Once again, because heavy and very heavy rains are not a novelty to this region. Also not unknown is the unprepared state of governance in the face of such natural disasters.

KERALA: Govt Trying to Convert J&K into India’s Palestine

THE Centre is trying to convert Kashmir into India’s Palestine by removing Article 370, splitting it into two and converting both into union territories, said Sitaram Yechury, CPI(M) general secretary earlier this week.

Hitting out at the Modi government for an ‘Israeli-model military occupation’ in Jammu and Kashmir, Yechury called on Indian patriots to join the battle for the soul and character of the country.

SFI Golden Jubilee Celebrations Begin

IT WAS a rainy afternoon.  Two student rallies withstanding heavy rain, culminated at Dumdum, the very locality where the seeds of SFI were sown,  in August  1970 through  the formation a preparatory committee.  SFI president, V P Sanu hoisted the white flag of Independence, Democracy and Socialism, marking the beginning of the golden jubilee celebrations of SFI.

TRIPURA: Tribal Youth Federation Holds Special Convention

On August 13, Tribal Youth Federation of Tripura organised a special convention at Agartala Town Hall with ten-point demands to the state and central government to resolve the matters of employment and jobs for youth, demands regarding education policies and livelihoods of the people. Polit Bureau member of the CPI(M) Manik Sarkar inaugurated the convention.

Agartala City has witnessed a spirited and enthusiastic presence of the tribal youth in this convention at the Town Hall.

Karnataka: Release of Capital in Kannada

MARXISM only offers powerful, unique and true critique of capitalism; hence, as long as capitalism lasts you cannot do without Marxism, asserted Professor Prabhat Patnaik.  He was delivering the keynote address at a seminar on ‘150 years of Capital’ and ‘Re-inventing Left’ at Bangalore on August 2.  The seminar was organised as part of the day-long celebration on the release of Kannada translation of ‘Capital Vol 1’. It was organised by Kriya Madhyama in collaboration with Navakarnatakaas, part of the ‘Marx 200-Capital 150’ project.
