Maharashtra: Relief by University Teachers during Lockdown

THE rising spread of COVID – 19, has led to extremely critical and challenging time the world over. In India, the confirmed cases have crossed 100,000. In Maharashtra this figure is more than 30,706, with 18,555 in Mumbai alone. Central and state governments have announced various steps to arrest the spread of this pandemic, including a nation-wide lockdown of all activities except essential services. During this crisis, the Bombay University and College Teachers’ Union (BUCTU) is responding to appeals for relief.

Enough of Flowers, Give Us Safety Gear: Frontline Workers Demand

AT the call of the CITU, more than four lakh workers across 400 districts in the country took part in protest activities on May 14, the Demands Day. They raised the crucial question of safety of the frontline workers and those working in industries risking infection during the Covid-19 pandemic.The protests took place in 10,000 places and while many workers came on to the streets to express their protest, many others protested from their homes demanding safety gear.

AP: Sundarayya Skill Development Centre Shelters Migrant Workers

SUNDARAYYA Skill Development Centre, a three-storied building in the capital region of Andhra Pradesh has been turned into a shelter for migrant workers. This building at Vaddeswaram has become a shelter for 47 migrant workers belonging to Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts of AP, bordering Odisha. Due to lockdown, these workers lost their livelihood and decided to go back to their native places in AP. They were coming from Chennai on foot as there was no travel facility.

AP: LG Polymers Gas Leak – A Corporate Crime

IN the wee hours of May 7, the unusual foggy dawn surprised people living around the LG Polymers India Ltd plant in Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. They were caught unawares by the pungent odour and breathlessness. People came out of their homes and ran helter-skelter, with many of them falling unconscious and collapsing on roads. It was a run for survival for many as panic gripped the area. Twelve people died in the gas leak.

Community Kitchens in Bengal

HUNDREDS of Left activists are showing exemplary motivation and are helping poor, stranded people in West Bengal. From the day one of lockdown, Left mass organisations have organised temporary food distribution centres. The success story of one has inspired others and numerous such centres have come up in the state. Without any help from the state government, these activists have run ‘community kitchens’ in many areas. They have been encouraged by neighbourhood and people are contributing in cash or kind.In Titagarh in North 24 Parganas, one such community kitchen has run for 42 days.

BIHAR: CPI(M) Stands with Migrant Workers Returning Home

IT is well established that Bihar has a long history of migration of labourers in large numbers and the intensifying agrarian crisis has contributed to increased migration from the state to all parts of the country and abroad. Soon after the announcement of the coronavirus lockdown, industries, factories and shops across the country were shut down and the migrant workers were forced to return to their state.The workers have not been paid and all modes of transport were also stopped. Soon they ran out of money and rations.

MAHA: CPI(M) Suggestions at the All-Party Conference Held by CM

ON May 7, 2020, Uddhav Thackeray, chief minister of Maharashtra, held an all-party video conference on tackling the Covid pandemic. CPI(M) Central Committee member Ashok Dhawale attended. The following is the nine-point charter that he placed on behalf of the CPI(M).1. The situation of migrant workers is grim. The state government should ascertain the city-wise number of migrant workers and prepare a concrete plan for sending them home. Sufficient trains/buses should be started from Mumbai and other major cities for this.
