After the protracted elections came to a grinding halt on May 19, the nation waited with bated breath for the results. 23rd May was the D day. However, the post poll interregnum was not quiet. The unprecedented acrimony and the divisiveness had marked these elections with most of the exit polls and the corresponding rollercoaster in the share market led to another round of heated argument in the television studios. Since the campaign was hotly contested, this was not surprising.

THE Christchurch mosque attack in New Zealand on March 15, 2019 killed 50 Muslim worshippers, seven of whom were Indians, which attracted immediate united condemnation from the entire nation. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was praised for her mature response to the attack. Not only did she promise swift action, but she also asserted that New Zealand was attacked because it stood for “diversity, kindness and compassion” and said she would renew efforts to counter right wing extremists whose politics had led to the targeting of Muslim worshippers.

Attacks on Kashmiri People; Government Remained in Slumber

PULWAMA fedayeen attack killed more than 40 personnel of the CRPF on February 14. There was widespread condemnation in the country at the ghastly killing. However, the ‘sangh’ and its outfits were more concerned at targeting the Kashmiri people, who either are students or work in different parts of the country, by attacking them, abusing them. There were series of attacks and intimidation of Kashmiri people in the country, more than 44 incidents were reported. Students hailing from Kashmir were commented upon in different parts.
