Joint Letter of Opposition Parties to Chief Justice of India

On June 28, 2026, twenty-three opposition parties sent a joint letter to the Chief Justice of India highlighting the grave danger to democracy in the country and seeking the judiciary’s intervention. The following is the text of the letter:

Esteemed Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, 

We would not have, under normal circumstances, written to you. Given the fact that our democracy is in jeopardy, we have chosen this unusual path.

The Prime Minister has misused Doordarshan for political messaging through his broadcast on April 18, 2026, while the Model Code of Conduct is in force and elections to the state assemblies of Tamil Nadu and West Bengal are nearing. Usage of the public broadcaster for political messaging during elections constitutes a violation of the MCC.

The CPI(M) has lodged a complaint with the Election Commission of India and has sought initiation of proceedings against the PM and others for this violation.

M A Baby, General Secretary of the CPI(M) has written a letter on April 09, 2026, to the Chief Election Commissioner against the backdrop of the large-scale deletion of voters from the electoral rolls in West Bengal following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). He has urged that the constitutional right to vote must be guaranteed by the ECI, at any cost.
