DUJ Protest Day on November 28 Against Invisible Press Censorship

The following is the press statement issued by the Delhi Union of Journalists on November 26.
THE Delhi Union of Journalists and the Delhi Press Unity Centre 2014 have called upon activists to join the protest meeting in the union premises on Friday evening against the invisible press censorship of trade union movements in general and even of struggles including court cases pertaining to journalists and press workers.

More Unity is Needed

THE Delhi Union of Journalists and the Delhi Press Unity Centre in a joint statement issued on September 24, on the eve of the meeting of the Confederation of Newspaper and News Agencies Employees in Delhi today has demanded that the state and central labour commissioners act in unison to protect the wage board for working journalists as upheld by the Supreme Court.

Janashakti Festival 2014 Held

Janashakti (Kannada weekly magazine) as part of the Janashakti Festival 2014 has organised a seminar on ‘Media and Social responsibility’ on August 17. Sitaram Yechury, CPI(M) Polit Bureau member inaugurated the seminar. He said the media has a social responsibility as it is the primary source of information for people to make an informed choice. But the corporate-controlled media is being used for manufacturing public consent. He also released Janashakti Independence Day Special.

The Battle of ‘So- shall’ Media

SOCIAL media, as the name suggests, is meant to be a social interaction among people, in which we create, share or exchange information in virtual groups or communities. True to its name, it had succeeded in generating a lot of buzz amongst various sections of the society. India is the second country in the world, only after the United States, to have crossed 100 million active users according to Facebook’s official announcement made on March 31, 2014. And, it already has a new figure in mind for India – 1 billion – almost the entire population of India!

Scribes Win Wage Board Battle

IN February 7, the Supreme Court finally dismissed the case that newspaper owners had collectively filed to deny the working journalists and other newspaper employees the legitimate dues announced by the Majithia wage board.

The court ruled that the wages awarded by Justice Majithia must be paid from November 11, 2011, the date on which the award was notified by the central government. Its recommendations are to be implemented from April 2014 and arrears paid in four instalments within a year.

Scribes Submit Charter to Delhi Govt

ON January 14, 2014, a delegation of the Delhi Union of Journalists (DUJ), the Delhi Press Initiative 2013-14 and the All India Newspaper Employees Federation submitted a memorandum to the chief minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, and also met the minister of labour, Girish Soni, with a note containing some suggestions.

Form Complaints Committees in Media Houses: DUJ

THROUGH its letters written to the Press Council of India (PCI), National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the National Commission for Women (NCW), the Delhi Union of Journalists (DUJ) has demanded the setting up of an internal complaints committee in accordance with the provisions of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act 2013, in every media organisation in the country, within a stipulated timeframe. The demand came in the wake of the growing number of cases of sexual assault and harassment taking place in media organisations.
