Myth of ‘CPI(M) Terror’ Busted

A NATIONWIDE campaign on so-called “Marxist Terror” in Kerala, unleashed by BJP under the guidance of RSS, has been going on uninterrupted. In almost every press conference, BJP’s national leaders, including Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh, are repeating the same rhetoric of CPI (M)’s terror which has allegedly intensified under the new LDF regime. A national meeting held in Kozhikode also called for protest action against the “violence”. This vicious campaign was mainly rotating in Kannur district, a traditional stronghold of the left movement in Kerala.

KERALA Saffron Brigade and the Congress

THE Congress and the UDF is not only trying to white-wash the deeds of RSS and its political face the BJP, but they are also attempting to join hands with them in an effort to defeat the LDF. What we saw in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation during the election to the District Planning Committee is the most recent manifestation of that. The corporation is run by the LDF which has the most number of councillors in the 100-member council. However, the UDF aligned with the BJP which has 35 members and got two people elected to the committee, one each from the BJP and the UDF.

For a More Equitable GST

THE introduction of VAT in the mid 1990s robbed the states of much of its taxation powers and curtailed their fiscal autonomy. With the constitutional amendment and introduction of the GST what had been prevailing de facto has now been de jure abolished. Now states no more have independent powers for indirect taxation, except on alcohol and petrol. They are forced to abide by the decisions of the GST Council where no decisions can be made without the concurrence of the central government, not even if all the states take a united position.

Kerala political situation: Role of LDF

THE newly elected LDF government of Kerala has successfully completed two and a half months in power, undertaking alternative development initiatives with the active participation and support of the people. The victory of the Left Democratic Front in Kerala is the result of the politics which the party and the front has consistently upheld. LDF fought the State assembly elections with an alternative policy against communalization and corporatization, and had won the battle with a comfortable margin.

KERALA: Disquiet in UDF

GIVING a major jolt to the United Democratic Front (UDF), Kerala Congress (M) chairman and former finance minister K M Mani boycotted the front’s meeting held at opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala’s official residence, on July 25.  In a clear message to the UDF that the party will no longer take the insults to its chairman lying down, none of the KCM leaders also attended the meeting, throwing the allies into jitters.

White Paper on Kerala’s Finances Exposes UDF’s Lies

KERALA finance minister TM Thomas Issac tabled a White Paper on the state’s finances in the Assembly on June 30, stating the situation was “alarming” and the government is striving hard to meet its day-to-day expenditure. Besides the day-to-day challenge of keeping the treasury afloat to meet the routine expenditure of the administrative machinery, Kerala was constantly facing grave paucity of resources for financing all its other plans and capital expenditure, the report said, adding the state has been living on a “financial lie”.
