Kerala political situation: Role of LDF

Kodiyeri Balakrishnan

THE newly elected LDF government of Kerala has successfully completed two and a half months in power, undertaking alternative development initiatives with the active participation and support of the people. The victory of the Left Democratic Front in Kerala is the result of the politics which the party and the front has consistently upheld. LDF fought the State assembly elections with an alternative policy against communalization and corporatization, and had won the battle with a comfortable margin. The Indian National Congress led United Democratic Front had lost even in those constituencies which were considered their strong holds and many of the noted leaders of UDF including the ministers of the former cabinet had lost in the elections. The BDJS-BJP alliancehadclaimed that they would win a minimum of ten seats but the progressive political atmosphere of Kerala had successfully foiled the attempts of the communal forces. Previous elections to the State Assemblies had usually seen winning coalitions emerging victorious with relatively thin margin when the absolute number of votes and vote shares are taken into account. But the just concluded Assembly election has made a break with the past. 2016 state assembly elections has seen LDF getting ahead of the UDF by a large margin. The vote share of LDF is 4.5 percentage higher than UDF and an absolute number of 9,25,000 more votes have been polled in favour of LDF. In Kerala, LDF was formed in 1980. At that time Congress(A), Kerala Congress (M), RSP and Janata dal (U) were constituents of the front but in different periods they left the front. But LDF has remained as a stable coalition with a consistent progressive politics and has emerged victorious in the state assembly elections, in 1987, 1996, 2006 and 2016. The constant efforts of CPIM has helped the front to remain relevant in the politics of Kerala uniting the Left and democratic forces. Kerala has very strong secular credentials. The RSS has tried to take advantage of the current regime at the centre led by BJP and has left no stone unturned to demolish secularism, the corner stone of Indian democracy . These elections have also witnessed the intense effort by RSS to gain votes by creating communal polarization and translating this polarization into votes. But the LDF had taken up the challenge in the electoral battle and had fought and defeated the communal politics. The vigorous fight offered by the Left has prevented RSS from replicating the model of hate politics that they have practiced in other states. The support enjoyed by the LDF among the democratic minded people across religions and among people with secular credentials from all walks of life is the result of the realization that the Left Democratic Front is the future hope as far as secularism is considered.Pinarayi Vijayan led LDF government has been taking every initiative possible for strengthening the secular base of the state. UDF disarray The internal strife in the Indian National Congress of the state has accentuated with the electoral debacle and Ramesh Chennithala has become the leader of opposition as the outgoing Chief Minister Oommen Chandy could not gather enough support within. Factionalism, euphemistically referred as Groupism, is rampant within the Indian National Congress. The rift is so strong that the INC has decided to leave the position of the Deputy leader of the House to the Muslim League, a constituent of the UDF as INC could not reach a consensus over it within. The third party in the UDF, Kerala Congress (M) has openly registered their displeasure. It has decided to part ways with UDF deciding to sit as a separate bloc within the Legislature. Janata Dal (U) and RSP were former constituents of LDF in Kerala. During the time of 2009 loksabha election , JDU had left LDF and joined UDF. It was in 2014 Loksabha elections that the , RSP left LDF and joined hands with UDF. In the just concluded legislative assembly elections, these two parties couldnot win even a single seat in Kerala legislative assembly. The General Secretary of RSP has openly criticized the activities of UDF and he has appreciated the LDF government for its initial works . These developments in the contemporary politics of Kerala prove beyond doubt that the INC will not survive with their single point agenda of blind anti -Marxism. The ruin that awaits INC is not only organizational but also political. The UDF has been reduced to a squabbling group of factions and forces trying desperately for survival. The Sangh Parivar is hoping that they could advance their politics of hate by exploiting the quagmire that the Congress-UDF has falle n into, by the illegitimate use of the power at the Centre. And it is true that Congress is completely ill-equipped to face the challenges posed by Communalism. The partners of the Congress front are thinking that the alliance with Congress is useless because of the waning strength of the INC in national politics. The intervention of RSS and measures taken at their behest have sown seeds of dissatisfaction among the minorities, dalits and adivasis of India. There is radicalization of a minuscule minority within the Muslim community. Reports are coming on the expanding influence of ISIS in Kerala. The leadership of RSS and the Muslim extremists alive been trying to divide the people on the basis of religious identity. Both question the idea of a modern secular nation state with citizenship being the primary identity of the individual. It is a potential threat to communal harmony and secularism which exists in Kerala. "We have no caste" For fighting against the communal forces we need to create a casteless and secular society. This is the hundredth year of the great proclamation, Namukku Jati illa (We have no caste) by the social reformer SreeNarayana Guru. On the occasion of the anniversary of the proclamation, the mass organisations, cultural groups and activists are going to conduct various programmes all over Kerala from 24th August, the birth anniversary of the social reformer Chattampi Swamikal, to 28th August, the birth anniversary of the social reformer Ayyankali. All these social reformers who belonged to various castes and who suffered various levels of oppression had strongly fought against the Brahminical system by affirming universal humanism and equality. Preparations are on to conduct colourfulGhoshaYatras, speeches and cultural festivalsat more than two hundred locations. Undoubtedly the massive participation by the people of Kerala in these programmes will help towards the building of a new Kerala which is secular, well developed and corruption free.
