THE country vests in the people of Tripura a historic role to establish the Left Front government in the state for an eighth term, thus heralding a real alternative to the BJP or the Congress which are two sides of the same coin. This was the clarion call Left Front leaders gave while addressing a mammoth rally at Vivekananda Maidan in Agartala on December 31. They exposed the evil moves of the BJP/RSS which, posing as self-proclaimed upholders of patriotism, are ultimately trying to break into pieces the unity and integrity of the country.

SOLIDARITY PROGRAMME IN WEST BENGAL: Tripura will Resist Enemies of the People

THE people of Tripura will not bow down before enemies of the people and will not allow single space to secessionists and communal forces. Despite the obstacles imposed by the centre and by the trouble makers, they will march to another victory. CPI(M) Polit Bureau member and chief minister of Tripura, Manik Sarkar, asserted with conviction at a public meeting in Kolkata on December 28. The meeting was organised by the CPI(M) West Bengal state committee to express solidarity with the struggling people of Tripura.

BJP Trying to Vitiate Peaceful Atmosphere in Tripura

AS the election to the Tripura assembly is expected to be held in February next year, hectic preparations are being made by the election authoritiesas well asall the political parties.The full team of the Election Commission visited the state on November 28. The commission met leaders of all the national political parties separately and herd the issues raised by them. They also supervised the administrative preparedness.

WEST BENGAL: Memorial Meeting for Comrade Sukomal Sen

CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury called for building up alternative policies to fight against the BJP. ‘What the country needs are policies, not leaders’, he said while addressing the memorial meeting of Comrade Sukomal Sen in Kolkata.CPI(M) Central Control Commission chairman and Central Committee member Comrade Sukomal Sen passed away on November 22. Rich tributes were paid to him in the memorial meeting. His contribution to the trade union movement, particularly in the fight against neoliberal attacks was remembered.Yechury was speaking just after 24 hours of Gujarat results.

ANDHRA PRADESH: Vizag Fest - A Celebration of Tradition & Science

NEARLY four lakh people visited the 10-day Vizag Fest at the sprawling Andhra University Engineering College Exhibition Grounds in Visakhapatnam. People from all walks of life, irrespective of caste, creed and religion, visited the festival held between December 1 and December 10. There were many who visited the festival on all the days. In a way, the people of Visakhapatnam felt that it was their own. The fest was a mix of many progressive activities.A book fair with over 100 stalls from all over the country was the main attraction.

TAMIL NADU: Kanyakumari Devastated by Ockhi Cyclone

END of November saw the fury of Ockhi cyclone in the three southern districts of Tamil Nadu namely Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi. In this, Kanyakumari bore the brunt while the cyclone was changing its direction towards the western coast. This district is well known for its coconut, rubber and plantain trees besides paddy, which form the economic backbone of the district. The strong gale uprooted each and every tree in the district besides numerous electricity poles bringing the normal life to a stanstill.

Oppose Privatisation of Dredging Corporation of India

THE union cabinet decided to completely privatise the Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) at its meeting on November 2. Subsequently, the government formed an inter-ministerial group on November 22 to speed up the privatisation process. CITU general secretary and Rajya Sabha member Tapan Sen wrote a letter to the prime minister on the same day, opposing the privatisation of the DCI. On December 4, a permanent employee of the corporation, N Venkatesh, committed suicide near Vizianagram in Andhra Pradesh.

TAMIL NADU: R K Nagar Bypoll: CPI(M) Calls for the Defeat of BJP-AIADMK alliance
