SCHEME WORKERS ALL INDIA STRIKE: A Strike to Defend the Basic Rights of People

IT was a historic day for the trade union movement of the country on many counts, when nearly sixty lakh scheme workers almost 90 per cent of whom are women, went on strike on January 17, 2018. This is for the first time that the joint platform of central trade unions has given a call for strike for a particular sector of workers.

Clarify: Serious Violation of Norms

CPI(M) Polit Bureau has issued the following statement on January 15

IT has been reported in sections of the media that a meeting was held at the residence of union home minister Rajnath Singh attended by BJP and RSS leaders to discuss about the forthcoming elections in Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland. Some of the media have also reported that the national security adviser Ajit Doval also attended the meeting. If correct, this is a shocking violation of norms and serious misconduct.

Supreme Court Issue

CPI(M) Polit Bureau has issued the following statement on January 12.

FOUR of the senior most judges of the Supreme Court have held an unprecedented press conference. They have raised important issues which have a vital bearing on the institution of the Supreme Court such as the way the roster of judges are allocated to hear cases.

The integrity and independence of the judiciary, particularly the Supreme Court, is a vital pillar of the constitution and non-negotiable.

On Haj Subsidy

CPI(M) Polit Bureau has issued the following statement on January 17

THE union government has decided to abruptly stop the Haj subsidy for pilgrims’ travel, though the Supreme Court had given a verdict in 2012 that this subsidy should be phased out over a ten year period. The sudden withdrawal of the subsidy seems arbitrary and motivated by other considerations.

Odisha State Conference Calls for Expanding Party Base

THE 21st Odisha state conference of the CPI(M) was successfully held from January 7-9 in Berhampur. It was inaugurated by CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury. On January 7, a hugely-attended public meeting was preceded by big colourful processions with red flags, festoons, placards and traditional band from different corners of the city. These processions converged at Ramalingam Tank Road, the venue of the public meeting. Hundreds of adivasis, dalits and toiling people from Ganjam, Gajapati, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi and Malkangiri joined the rally.

Govt Proposes Replacing Permanent Employment With ‘Fixed Term Employment’; CITU Opposes

THE BJP government at the Centre has planned ‘employment generation’ by replacing each permanent employment by a number of fixed term employments in all sectors of industries and services. Consider this, a permanent employee remaining 30 years in service till retirement may be replaced by six or more fixed term employees each for every five years or less.

JHARKHAND: CPI(M) State Conference Vows to Build Left-Democratic Alternative

THE sixth state conference of the CPI(M) Jharkhand commitee was held at the ‘Coal Capital of India’, Dhanbad on January 10-12, 2018. The conference commenced with the hoisting of the Party flag by veteran leader and state secretariat member of CPI(M), Rajendra Singh Munda, followed by three rallies across the thoroughfares of the city, which culminated at the Zila Parishad ground. Despite cold temperatures and foggy skies, thousands of workers, peasants, youth, students, women and progressive people of Dhanbad across different sections of the society marched in large numbers.

Women’s Organisations Protest Brutal Incidents of Rape in Haryana

In the wake of four incidents of rape in the past three days in Haryana, a number of women’s organiSations including AIDWA burnt the effigy of Haryana chief minister ML Khattar outside the gate of Haryana Bhawan in New Delhi on January 17, in protest against the recent spate of rape and murder cases in the state. These cases were reported from Kurukshetra/Jind, Panipat, Pinjore and Faridabad. In three of these, the victims were brutally murdered.

The protestors raised slogans against Khattar and demanded his resignation.
