Philippines: “Separation” from the US and “Pivot” to China

THE election of Rodrigo Duterte to the Philippine presidency could mean the realisation of America's worst nightmare in the region coming true. The Philippines is the lynchpin of the Obama administration's military “pivot to the East”, aimed at militarily encircling China. Now within a few months after being sworn in as president, Duterte is threatening to upset the American applecart by not only cosying up to China but also threatening political and military “separation” from the United States. Philippines is America's oldest military ally in the region.

Hirakhand Express Accident

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement on January 22.THE Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) expresses its shock and deep sorrow at the Hirakhand Express accident in which thirty two people have been reported killed so far and fifty four injured. Nine bogies of the Jagadalpur-Bhubaneswar train were derailed as a result of the accident which took place in the Vijayanagaram district of Andhra Pradesh.

Sovereign and Super Sovereign of Indian Republic

GIVEN the republican thrust of the Indian constitution, the above title might look quite anachronistic to some. This is because Indian constitution does not allow for such a reading as its republican character eliminates the need for hierarchical or parallel conception of sovereignty. The republican character of the Indian constitution makes people uniformly sovereign thus ruling out any competing conception of sovereignty.

KERALA: Mock Trial of Modi Sends a Strong Message against Demonetisation

THE Mock trial of Narendra Modi held in all district head quarters of Kerala on January 24th evening sent a strong message to the central government against  digitisation of transactions. Thousands of people gathered at all centres to register their protest against the hardships caused by demonetisation. People demanded the removal of all restrictions on cash withdrawal and a halt on imposing digitised money transactions.The mock trial was organised at the call of CPI (M) Central Committee which was held in Thiruvananthapuram in early this month.

All set for the Tenth All India Conference of DYFI

FOR the first time Ernakulum is going to host the all India conference of the Democratic Youth Federation of India, from February 1-5. On February 2nd morning, former Supreme Court judge, Justice Gopal Gowda will inaugurate the delegate session. The conference will be attended by 700 delegates from across the country. Eminent scientist Prof. Pushpa M Bhargava will deliver the keynote address in the inaugural session, through video conference from Hyderabad. He is unable to attend the conference due to his failing health.

CITU Congratulates Scheme Workers For Successful All India Strike

IN a statement issued on January 21, CITU has congratulated the lakhs of scheme workers, not only anganwadi, ASHA, Mid Day Meal workers, but also those working in many other central government schemes like NRLM, Sarva Siksha Abhiyan, National Child Labour Project etc who had participated in the nationwide strike by the Scheme workers on January 20, 2017.Strike was observed in 23 states in the country.

Hundred days of Mahajana Padayatra

ON the completion of hundred days of Mahajana Padayatra of the CPI(M) in Telangana, Brinda Karat, Polit Bureau member of the CPI(M) addressed a public meeting held in Eturu Naagaram district. She congratulated the people for making the padayatra a success despite the cash crunch caused by demonetisation. She accused the Telangana state government of suppressing tribal population be foisting false cases on more than 800 tribal activists. She said that the CPI(M) played an important role in the passage of the Forest Rights Act.
