BEST Workers Stage Two Day Strike

MORE than 24,000 drivers and conductors, working in the transport division of Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport undertaking (BEST), recently went on a two day heroic strike to protest against the unilateral action of the management to enhance working time from 8 to 12 hours, adversely restructuring their service conditions.
The strike was total in the entire BEST operation in all the 26 depots across the Mumbai city, totally paralysing the service on April 1 and 2, 2014.

Homage to Comrade K L Bajaj

WITH the demise of Comrade K L Bajaj on April 18, 2014, the Left and the working class movement in Maharashtra have lost one of their stalwarts. For the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Centre of Indian Trade Unions, the loss of Comrade K L Bajaj is irreparable. At the time of his death at the age of 79, Bajaj was a member of the CPI(M) Central Committee and the Maharashtra state secretariat, and was the vice president of the CITU at both the national and the state level. He was one of the convenors of the Trade Union Joint Action Committee (TUJAC) in Maharashtra.

The 58 session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women

The 58 session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women was held in the UN headquarters in New York on 10 – 21 March 2014. Over 6000 representatives from 193 UN member states and NGOs from all over the world participated in the session. The World Federation of Trade Unions which as a permanent representative at the UN in New York, was represented in the session by Hemalata, secretary, CITU and BV Vijayalakshmi, secretary, AITUC

INCREASE IN MINIMUM PENSION

THROUGH a statement issued from New Delhi on March 15, 2014, the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has denounced the anti-worker bias of the UPA government which has not yet notified the increase in minimum pension to Rs 1,000 under the EPF pension scheme and enhancement of the ceiling of contribution and coverage which has been unanimously recommended by the Central Board of Trustees (CBT) of the Employees Provident Fund Organisation on February 4, 2014 and sent to the government for immediate action on the same.
