GIVING a heavy blow to the Sangh Parivar, more than two thousand dissident BJP workers including the former National Council member O K Vasu and former Kannur district general secretary A Ashokan have quit the BJP and came over to the CPI(M). On January 28, CPI(M) state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan welcomed the new entrants to the party’s fold. The public meeting held on the occasion at Panur in Kannur district on Tuesday was attended by tens of thousands of people.

Rahul’s Alappuzha ‘Picnic’ Ends in Chaos

THE Congress party’s prime ministerial material, Rahul Gandhi’s one day trip to Kerala to take part in a roadshow in connection with the Youth Congress padayatra miserably ended up in an utter chaos with gross violation of law on January 13, 2014. It has led to a public outcry demanding that legal action must be taken against the Congress leader who travelled atop a police jeep. Kodikkunnil Suresh, central minister for state for labour, was injured and hospitalised in the melee that took place during the ridiculous roadshow at Noornad in Alappuzha district.

Police Attack Students; Hurl Grenades on Campus

ON January 9, 2014, students in Thiruvananthapuram were brutally attacked by the police when they staged a protest against the UDF government’s move to commercialise education by granting autonomous powers to several educational institutions. Police lathicharged the students and used water cannons on them. They hurled grenades on University College campus, one of the premier educational institutions in the state, resulting in injuries to some student activists.

LDF Intensifies Stir with Cliff House Siege

THE opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF) has intensified its struggle to press for resignation of the Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy, tainted in the solar panel scam, with a massive siege of Cliff House, official residence of the chief minister at Thiruvananthapuram. This indefinite blockade of the CM’s official residence began on Monday, December 9, as thousands of LDF workers literally laid a siege of it. Hundreds of workers courted arrest.

CPI(M) State Plenum Concludes

ON November 29, 2013, the CPI(M)’s Kerala state plenum, held over the last three days at EMS Nagar in Palakkad, concluded with an appeal to the party cadres to intervene strongly in the concrete political issues in the state. The plenum also decided to energise the organisation.The plenum,which was attended by all-India leaders of the party, including its general secretary Prakash Karat and Polit Bureau members Sitaram Yechury, S Ramachandran Pillai and M A Baby, culminated with a massive rally that was attended by nearly two lakh party workers coming from Palakkad district alone.
