CITU Denounces Unified Pension Scheme Calls it Another Dubious Effort to Deceive Employees

THE Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), in a statement issued on August 25, denounced the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) approved by the union cabinet on August 24, 2024, as another dubious and desperate effort to deceive government employees of their rightful claim to the Old Pension Scheme (OPS). CITU urges the restoration of the old pension scheme.The old pension scheme was non-contributory with an assured pension, as per the Central Civil Service Rules, 1972, and later, the 2021 rules.

Mpox Resurgence: Need for Global Coordination and Vaccine Equity

MPOX, formerly known as monkeypox until the WHO renamed it in November 2022 to avoid stigma, is resurging, particularly in Africa. On August 14, 2024, WHO declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) due to a sharp rise in cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and neighbouring countries, including Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda. This is the second time in history (the first being in 2022 also for mpox) that a PHEIC has been declared for a DNA virus outbreak, highlighting the urgent need for coordinated global efforts to control the virus.

THERE need not have been a war in Ukraine. The Russian government had made it clear almost two decades ago that it would not tolerate the expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) eastward. Tripura Devastated by Floods: Communists Step Up with Robust Relief Efforts

EXCEPTIONALLY heavy rainfall in Tripura for 3-4 days from August 19 onwards caused havoc for nearly half of the total population in the state. Remove Provision Blocking Regularisation of Contractual Workers in Karnataka: CITU

THE Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) submitted a memorandum to Karnataka chief minister S Siddaramaiah on August 22, regarding the Karnataka Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes (Reservation of Appointments (Amendment) Act, 2024. While the CITU acknowledges the positive aspects of the amendment, which includes provisions for reservations for SC, ST, and OBC candidates in outsourced jobs within government departments and public sector undertakings (PSUs), it has expressed significant concerns over a specific proviso in the legislation.
