West Bengal State Committee Reviews Election Results

THE CPI(M) West Bengal state committee has thoroughly reviewed the election results in its two day meeting on June 2-3. CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat, along with Polit Bureau members Sitaram Yechury and Manik Sarkar were present in the meeting.

CPI(M) Wins Seats in AP, Odisha

THE CPI(M) has won a seat each in the elections to the assemblies of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha; these were held along with the parliament elections.
The party won the Bonai (ST) seat in Odisha, with its candidate Laxman Munda defeating the ruling Biju Janata Dal candidate by a margin of 1818 votes. Munda secured 39,125 votes.
In Andhra Pradesh the party won the Bhadrachalam (ST) seat, defeating the TDP nominee by 1815 votes. The party’s candidate was Sunnam Rajaiah.
The CPI(M) did not have a representation in the Odisha assembly last time.

VLADIMIR Ilyich Ulyanov, popularly and endearingly called Lenin, was born in the city of Sinbirsk in 1870. He joined a Marxist circle at an early age and became a seasoned and matured Marxist in a short period. He united all the Marxist workers in St Petersburg in 1895 and carried to them the revolutionary message of Marxism.

Naresh Jamatia Joins Ministry

ON May 23, Naresh Jamatia took oath of office and secrecy as a new member of the council of ministers in the Left Front government of Tripura. He was administered the oath by the governor Devanand Kanwar, in presence of the chief minister Manik Sarkar and other members of the cabinet at Agartala. Naresh Jamatia, a member of the CPI(M)’s Tripura state committee, was first elected to the state assembly in 2008. His induction in the cabinet was necessitated as Jitendra Choudhury, a member of the cabinet since 1993, had had to resign after being elected to the 16th Lok Sabha.

AIKS Condemns Women Leader’s murder

THROUGH a statement issued from New Delhi on May 26, 2014, the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) has strongly condemned the gruesome murder of Comrade Ashmira Begum of Muhulla village, who was two times a member of the Ankhona panchayat. She, the wife of Ketugram village secretary of Kisan Sabha, Enayat Karim, was murdered by a killer gang of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). She was 35 years old. The AIKS expressed its grief and conveyed its heartfelt condolences to the family members and fellow activists of the beloved comrade.

Emotional Farewell to a Legendary Communist

ON May 22, thousands of working people and the cadres and supporters of the CPI(M) bid a tearful and emotional farewell to Comrade R Umanath, a legendary communist and a pioneer of the trade union movement, who passed away here on Wednesday, May 21.
Leaders and cadre of the Left and other political parties and members of trade unions paid respect to the mortal remains of the late leader, kept at Venmani Illam, the district headquarters of the CPI(M) in Tiruchi.

GIC Union Highlights Public Sector’s Plight

Antarctic Ice Sheet Melting Much Faster than Predicted

IT is as certain as we can be in science that we will lose the Antarctic ice sheet within the next 200-500 years, leading to a devastating rise of about four metres in sea level. Worse, the process is now irreversible. Two separate studies --- one by the NASA used satellite and airborne radar data for the past 40 years, and the other by European Space Agency's CryoSat2 satellite that measured the height of the glaciers --- have both come to very similar conclusions. The Antarctic is losing ice from the glaciers at approximately 160 billion tonnes a year.
