On the victory of the exit from the European Union
In the referendum held in the United Kingdom
The following is the press release issued by the Portuguese Communist Party
THE victory of the exit from the European Union in the referendum held in the United Kingdom is an event of tremendous political magnitude for the people of the United Kingdom and also for the peoples of Europe.
A MASSIVE parliament march and rally of about 20,000 central government employees was held at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on June 24, 2016. The rally was organised by National Joint Council of Action (NJCA) of central government employees comprising railways, defence, confederation and postal organisations demanding modification in the recommendations of Seventh Central Pay Commission including minimum wage and fitment formula.
THE Left Democratic Front government completed its first month, providing hope and optimism to the people. On May 25, the LDF formed the government, with Pinarayi Vijayan as chief minister, after a tremendous victory in assembly election bagging 91 out of 140 seats.
THE burden on common man’s life is the outcome of the policy adopted by the central government and state governments. The attack on food and employability is becoming fierce day by day in Bengal; factories are getting closed; people are losing job and on the other hand skyrocketing price rise of the essential commodities is putting the people in a miserable condition.
THE Khattar-led BJP government in Haryana has just completed one-and-a-half years. Two prominent features have emerged in this short span – fast erosion in its credibility and strenuous attempt at saffronisation of social and administrative environment. Both are moving at a matching speed. A characteristic trinity of its contemptuous approach of disrupting the unity of people, attack on their rights and curtailing of welfare measures is clearly visible.
THE Left parties – CPI(M), CPI, AIFB, SUCI (C) and CGPI – organised a demonstration at Jantar Mantar on June 27 against the decision of the Modi government to allow 100 percent Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in a host of sectors including defence sector, retail food trade, civil aviation, cable networks, DTH and other telecom services. Apart from this, 74 percent FDI through the automatic route will be allowed to facilitate takeover of existing Indian pharmaceutical companies. FDI in the private security agencies has been increased from 49 to 74 percent.
THE Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has condemned the imposition of the draconian Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) on the employees of the Haryana State Electricity Board by the BJP-led government.
DRAWING parallels to the BJP regime and the RSS with Hitler and his idea of nationalism, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury warned against the metamorphosis of a "secular democratic republic of India into a rabidly intolerant fascistic Hindu Rashtra".
ALMOST all commentators on the British electorate’s vote to leave the European Union, whether from the Right or the Left, have missed the main point of it, namely that it is a massive revolt against the hegemony of globalised finance. Indeed, the fact that they have missed this point is itself indicative of the ubiquity of this hegemony among the literati, from which the British electorate, interestingly, appears substantially to have freed itself.
THE people of the United Kingdom have voted in a historic referendum in favour of the country quitting the European Union (EU). Most of the mainstream media have been telling us that the campaign for Britain to leave the EU was entirely that of a far right lunatic fringe. This is far from the truth. While there were undoubtedly reactionary far right forces in the campaign such as the UK Independence Party (UKIP) which fomented xenophobia and racism, it should be obvious that most of the 17 million people who voted in favour of ‘Leave’ were not racists.
