Six Lakh Anganwadi Workers & Helpers Observe “Black Day” on July 11

AIDWA Welcomes Order by the National Commission for Scheduled Castes

THE All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), in a statement issued on July 13 has welcomed the order passed by the National Commission for Scheduled Castes asking the Haryana and Rajasthan governments to reconsider their recently imposed criteria of minimum educational qualifications for those wanting to contest panchayat elections.

End Impunity: Scrap AFSPA

THE Supreme Court, in a salutary judgement, has declared that the armed forces cannot act with impunity in the disturbed areas where it operates under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA). The court has held that there cannot be “absolute immunity” from trial by a criminal court if any offence is committed by an army soldier. The court has ordered that all allegations of extra-judicial killings in Manipur should be probed.

THE outburst of mass protests throughout Kashmir, consequent to the killing of Hizbul leader Burhan Wani, has paralysed the valley for the past five days. Upto now, 34 persons have been killed, mostly young men and one policeman; 1,400 have been injured, many with serious wounds. The valley has been simmering with discontent for quite some time. The growing alienation of the people, particularly the youth, was visible in the big gatherings when the funerals of militants killed by the security forces were held.

White Paper on Kerala’s Finances Exposes UDF’s Lies

KERALA finance minister TM Thomas Issac tabled a White Paper on the state’s finances in the Assembly on June 30, stating the situation was “alarming” and the government is striving hard to meet its day-to-day expenditure. Besides the day-to-day challenge of keeping the treasury afloat to meet the routine expenditure of the administrative machinery, Kerala was constantly facing grave paucity of resources for financing all its other plans and capital expenditure, the report said, adding the state has been living on a “financial lie”.

CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury was awarded the N Ramachandran award for distinction in public service, 2016. Apart from a citation and a memento, the award also consists of a cash component of Rs 50,000.

The N Ramachandran Foundation was established to carry forward the legacy of highly respected journalist of Kerala who worked for over 65 years with integrity and had done reporting with a focus on people’s issues. N Ramachandran was associated with a major Kerala media group, Kerala Kaumudi.
