ON July 26, 2023, Niger’s presidential guard moved against the sitting president –Mohamed Bazoum – and conducted a coup d’état. A brief contest among the various armed forces in the country ended with all the branches agreeing to the removal of Bazoum and the creation of a military junta led by presidential guard commander general Abdourahamane “Omar” Tchiani. This is the fourth country in the Sahel region of Africa to have experienced a coup – the other three being Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Mali.
MUCH of the ex-colonial world, having set up dirigiste regimes to wrest control over its natural resources from metropolitan capital and to build up industries behind protectionist walls, was sought to be re-assimilated into imperialist hegemony through the neo-liberal economic order; but in one segment of this world decolonisation itself was never completed. A FRIENDLY football match was organised by the National Committee for Solidarity with Cuba to commemorate the 97th birth anniversary of the Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro on August 13. The match was held between the Ambassadors XI and Solidarity Committee XI.BV Raghavulu, Polit Bureau member of the CPI(M) inaugurated the match by ceremoniously kicking the football. Prior to this, he spoke about Fidel Castro and his internationalism. Raghavulu emphasised that Fidel Castro always remains an inspiration to the youth throughout the world.
THE cruel death due to the ragging of a first-year fresher in Jadavpur University (JU) Main hostel has sent shock waves in the university and across the state. Swapnadeep Kundu, who hails from Bagula, Nadia, came to the university just three days before he “fell” from the third floor of his hostel building on the night of August 9 and breathed his last around 4.30 am the next day. The horrific incident sparked a furore, with many terming it a clear case of ragging and murder. The police are investigating the death.
