Nationwide Strike by FMRAI Demanding Price Reduction of Medicines, Medical Devices

MEDICAL and sales representatives throughout the country took part in an all-India strike on February 3, at the call of FMRAI, demanding reduction of prices of medicines and medical devices and revival of public sector pharma units. The striking workers also demanded that no tax be imposed on medicines and medical devices, even under the proposed GST regime.

The Rajasthan state committee of the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) has said that the rollback of electricity tariff hikes and other announcements by the government is a victory of the organised and united peasant movement in Rajasthan. The broadest unity of peasants and their participation in resilient activism across all districts of the state, under the four month old movement led by the Kisan Sabha has made the anti-farmer Vasundhara Raje government lose its sleep. The BJP-RSS state government has been forced to concede defeat in front of the organised peasant movement.

Scheme Workers Stage Protest in Jammu

Workers of various central government schemes including ASHA, Anganwadi and Mid-day Meal and those employed in contingency work staged a day-long protest in Jammu on January 20 in support of their long-pending demands. Hundreds of such workers from different districts of Jammu region participated in the protest. All workers holding red flags and placards in their hands raised slogans demanding minimum wage of Rs 18,000 per month and social security benefits. A rally started from the Press Club in Jammu and after passing through various areas culminated at Indira Chowk.

DYFI Conference Resolves to Fight for Employment, Secularism and Democracy

Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) held its 10th all India conference in Kochi, Kerala from February 1-5,  2017 resolving to build widest possible unity of progressive youth in the country and fight for employment, secularism and democracy. 680 delegates representing one crore 15 lakh members assembled for the conference. Six delegates representing fraternal foreign youth organisations also participated.

The enemies of unity, peace and development have again started using their fangs to create fissures among the people, disturb the peaceful atmosphere prevailing here, and sabotage the ongoing innumerable developmental activities throughout the state. The situation demands that these elements be thoroughly exposed and totally alienated politically, ideologically and organisationally, said Manik Sarkar, Polit Bureau member of the CPI(M) and chief minister of the state, at Ambassa on February 12, 2016.

Jallikattu and Beyond

TAMIL NADU witnessed the mammoth struggle for Jallikattu which was not only spontaneous but also attracted each and every section of the people of the state. Never before in the recent memory there was such a massive struggle. The depth of the struggle can be gauged from some interesting manifestations. The Muslims and Christians also took part in large number giving the clear message that Jallikattu and Pongal festival belongs to all irrespective of religions.
