AFTER ascending the chair of the chief minister for the third time, Mamata Banerjee has done little to address the gargantuan task of combatting the rising number of patients infected by the killer coronavirus. Insufficient hospital beds, ICUs, oxygen beds, were quickly taking the situation out of control. As the numbers started spiralling, people ran from pillar to post to lay their hands on oxygen cylinders.

CREATING a new chapter in the history of Kerala – the first time in four decades, an incumbent government got re-elected in the state with a huge majority of 99 seats in the 140 member assembly – the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Left Democratic Front government was sworn-in on May 20, at a simple ceremony in Thiruvananthapuram while observing all Covid protocols.  CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury, Polit Bureau member Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, CPI(M) state secretary in-charge A Vijayaraghavan were among the dignitaries who attended the function.The 21-member cabinet has 17 new members.

Uttar Pradesh: BJP Loses in Rural Local Bodies

THE determination of the Yogi government of Uttar Pradesh to go ahead with the three-tier panchayat elections in the state has not brought it any political dividends while it has extracted a very heavy toll from its citizens. A total of 58,176-gram panchayats and 826 blocks were up for election along with 3,050 zila panchayat seats. The numbers that became vulnerable to infection in the course of the month-long campaign and the voting process itself runs into crores.

SOME traumatic incidents do completely expose the extent of degradation in the existing times. The untimely and tragic passing away of Mahavir Narwal turned out to be ironically one of those incidents. Narwal passed away on May 9 due to Covid related complications. His demise at a time when his daughter was locked up in a prison cell on totally baseless and malafide charges has shaken all the democratic sections of our society.In the face of this extremely painful tragedy, our judiciary seems to have proved itself to be completely insensitive towards any human values.

Communist stalwart Com Gowri Amma passes away

VETERAN communist leader K R  Gouri Amma is no more. Firebrand Communist K R Gouri Amma (102) passed away at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram on May 11 morning due to age-related ailments.Gouri Amma has had an exciting and lengthy political career in Kerala as a student leader, trade unionist, kisan and women’s leader, and minister in successive Left-led governments. Her life was synonymous with the history of modern Kerala.

Nationwide online Public Meeting on Burning Issues

IN a new initiative, on the evening of May 8, 2021, the CITU, AIKS and AIAWU held a joint nationwide online public meeting on the burning current issues of the people of our country. The public meeting was widely propagated through posters in Hindi, English, and other national languages. Tens of thousands of working people from around 25 states attended the meeting.The speakers were the general secretaries of the three, class organisations – Tapan Sen, Hannan Mollah, and B Venkat.
