The young woman from Tamil Nadu has scored a legal victory in her fight for justice for her slain husband, but she is determined to carry forward her battle against caste-based violence and honor killings.Kausalya, in her early 20s, and her husband V Sankar came under a mercenary attack in Udumalpet town in Tamil Nadu’s Tirupur district in March 2016 for their inter-caste marriage. While Kausalya survived the attack, perpetrated by her father, Sankar succumbed to his injuries.

The CPI(M) has welcomed the Supreme Court judgement and said this serves as a warning to all those in public life who indulge in corruption.After 18 years of legal proceedings, Justice Michael D' Cunha in 2015 convicted former chief minister J Jayalalithaa, Sasikala, Sudhakaran and Ilavarasi, in a disproportionate assets case.

CITU Tamilnadu State Conference Calls for Consolidating Working Class Unity

THE 13th conference of CITU’s Tamilnadu state unit was held in the pearl city of Tuticorin on September 9-12. The conference called upon the working class of Tamilnadu to consolidate the unity among various sections and forge a militant fight against the central and state governments that pursue neo-liberal economic policies against the interests of the workers.The reception committee was constituted in April with K Kanagaraj as its president and R Russel as secretary and V Balasubramaniam as treasurer.

CITU Wins NLC Elections

THE Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has won a massive support of workers of the 'Navratna' company Neyveli Lignite Corporation Ltd, in the elections for recognition of unions.
The elections were held on June 17. The results were announced at the night on the same day.
There are 13 unions in the NLC. Among them six unions, CITU, ATP, LPF, PTS, BMS and AITUC contested in this secret ballot voting.
As the permanent employees of NLC are only eligible to vote, 11,109 were the voters. Among them 10,680 votes were polled.

The Struggle For An Alternative, Pro-People Politics Will Continue

THE elections to the legislative assembly of Tamil Nadu held on May 16, 2016, have resulted in a more or less bipolar outcome. Of the 232 constituencies where the polls were held, the AIADMK along with its allies has won 134 seats. The main opposition party, the DMK, has won 89 seats while its major ally, the Indian National Congress (INC) won 8 and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), another ally of the DMK, won one seat.

THE elections for Tamilnadu Assembly are scheduled on May 16 along with Kerala. In Tamilnadu for the first time an alternative front has been formed against both DMK and AIADMK. This front consists of CPI(M), CPI, MDMDK (headed by Vaiko), VCK (a strong dalit party) which together had formed Peoples Welfare Front. Later on, DMDK of Vijaykanth and TMC of GK Vasan (son of Karuppiaih Moopanar and former central minister) also joined and a six party alliance emerged.
