Jayalalithaa’s Conviction and After

SPECIAL Judge and 36th Additional Sessions Judge John Michael Cunha delivered a historic judgment in Bengaluru on September 27, 2014, holding the former chief minister of Tamil Nadu and the general secretary of the AIADMK, Selvi J Jayalalithaa guilty of charges of corruption under the Prevention of Corruption Act and sentenced her, along with three others, to four years of simple imprisonment. She was also asked to pay a fine of Rs 100 crores.

A SEMINAR titled ‘Electoral Reforms: A Leftist Perspective’ was held in Madurai on October 4, 2014 as part of the silver jubilee celebrations of ‘Marxist’ – the ideological Tamil monthly magazine brought out by Tamilnadu state committee of the CPI (M). TN: Violation of Democratic Norms in Local Bodies By-Polls

BY the time this issue of People’s Democracy is printed, by-polls for thousands of local bodies in Tamil Nadu would have been held. The polling is on September 18. The issue at stake is ‘democracy’.

The presence of around 20 state ministers in Coimbatore city for the mayoral elections by-poll has raised suspicion. Their arrival appeared to be for reasons other than campaign. AIADMK cadres were busy in distributing cash for votes till the late night on September 17. Not only in Coimbatore city, but everywhere across the state they indulged in cash distribution.

TAMILNADU: CPI(M), CPI Observe Dawn-To-Dusk Hunger Strike

THOUSANDS of activists belonging to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Communist Party of India observed a dawn-to-dusk hunger strike across Tamil Nadu on September 1, condemning anti-people policies of the state and central governments.This was a culmination of the statewide and weeklong propaganda and agitation programme in response of the call of the Left parties. CPI(M) state secretary G Ramakrishnan and CPI state secretary D Pandian led the protest at Chennai.

Left Launches Mass Contact Programme

THE Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Communist Party of India jointly launched a week-long door-to-door campaign against the anti-people policies of the state and central governments across the state of Tamil Nadu. At Chennai, the campaign was inaugurated by G Ramakrishnan, CPI(M) state secretary and D Pandian, CPI secretary. They met the people by going door-to-door in the locality of Thousand Lights Area in South Chennai district. G Ramakrishnan gave pamphlets to the people. Hundreds of CPI(M)-CPI cadres with red flags walked through the streets with the leaders.

TAMILNADU CPI(M) Protests against Sand Mafia in Vellore

HUNDREDS of activists of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) took out a 13-km march from Walajapet to Mel Visharam in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu on August 14, urging the government to protect the River Palar from sand mining mafia.

The movement was a culmination of protests against rampant sand mining in the state as well as in the River Palar which flows through Vellore district.
