SFI to Organise Strike in Schools on RTE Issue

ON June 11, hundreds of students across Tamilnadu staged protest actions in front of district educational offices demanding proper implementation of the Right to Education Act (RTE Act) in the state. The Students Federation of India organised these actions.
While the academic year 2014-15 has started, one sees the utter commercialisation of education making its way in the state without any hurdles. This year, private players in the field of school education in particular openly challenged the constitution of India which ensures the right to education.

Emotional Farewell to a Legendary Communist

ON May 22, thousands of working people and the cadres and supporters of the CPI(M) bid a tearful and emotional farewell to Comrade R Umanath, a legendary communist and a pioneer of the trade union movement, who passed away here on Wednesday, May 21.
Leaders and cadre of the Left and other political parties and members of trade unions paid respect to the mortal remains of the late leader, kept at Venmani Illam, the district headquarters of the CPI(M) in Tiruchi.

BEFI Flays Bank Privatisation Move

AT a time when the whole country was awaiting the results of the Lok Sabha elections, a panel appointed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), headed by former Axis Bank chairman P J Nayak, came out with its report advocating privatisation of public sector banks (PSBs). The eight member committee constituted by the RBI on January 20, 2014, had had its first sitting on February 18 and submitted its report on May 12 --- that is, too promptly and before the three months time stipulated for it since the first sitting.

CPI(M), CPI Take Campaign to Doorsteps

IN Tamilnadu, the CPI(M) and the CPI are jointly contesting 18 Lok Sabha constituencies. It means nearly 110 assembly segments. They have nearly 25,000 cadres, including 2,000 women, in the field. These are from various walks of life.
These self-effacing, selfless and dedicated cadres of the two Left parties have spread to every nook and corner of the constituencies which the Left combine is contesting in the state. They and the supporters are working tirelessly for the victory of the Left nominees.

CPI(M), CPI to Contest Jointly

THE CPI(M) and CPI units in Tamilnadu has decided to face the Lok Sabha elections jointly.
The DMK’s hope of roping the CPI into its alliance for the Lok Sabha polls was dashed late on March 10 with the CPI’s executive committee backing the CPI(M)’s decision to go it alone in the state.
After the ruling AIADMK went back on its announcement on contesting with the two Left parties, the latter decided to work together. However, the media scooped that there were possibilities of an alliance between the DMK and the Left. DMK chief M Karunanidhi also expressed his willingness.

Talks on for an Alternative: Karat

ON February 3, CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat expressed hope that the electoral understanding between the AIADMK and the Left parties would achieve success in Tamilnadu in the coming general elections, and also contribute to providing an alternative to the country.

Asked whether appeals had been made to other secular and democratic forces to be part of the alternative envisaged, he said discussions were on with various parties.

Extensive Campaign against Insurance Laws (Amendment) Bill

INSURANCE employees under the banner of South Zone Insurance Employees’ Federation (SZIEF) met five lakh people in the state of Tamilnadu on one single day on 11th December. This was as part of the struggle against attempts to raise foreign direct investment cap in insurance sector from existing 26 per cent to 49 per cent, and to destabilise the public sector General Insurance companies through disinvestment. All these have been proposed in the Insurance Laws (Amendment) Bill that is before parliament now.

CITU Observes Jyoti Basu Birth Centenary

HELD at Kannur in Kerala, the last national conference of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) had called upon all its affiliates to observe Comrade Jyoti Basu Birth Centenary in a fitting manner throughout the year, starting from July 8, 2013. Accordingly, the Tamilnadu state unit of the CITU has chalked out a series of programmes to take the Comrade Basu’s message to the mass of workers.
