IN Cairo, representatives from Hamas held indirect negotiations with Israel for a ceasefire. The sticking point for several of the rounds was the order of events. Israel wanted the hostages to be released before it would stop the bombing, while Hamas said that the bombing must stop first. Israel has called for the disarming and dismantling of Hamas, which is a maximalist demand unlikely to be met. Hamas meanwhile would like not only a ceasefire but an end to the war.

THE third phase of polling in Bengal, which took place on May 7, involved a total of four seats – Jangipur, Murshidabad, Malda North and Malda South. According to unrevised estimates, out of the two Lok Sabha constituencies of Malda and Murshidabad, the Murshidabad Lok Sabha constituency received the highest voter turnout – 76.49 per cent. Another Lok Sabha constituency in this district, Jangipur, polled 72.13 per cent. 73.30 per cent voted in Malda North and 73.68 per cent in Malda South.

IN a significant setback for the Congress and its legislator Mathew Kuzhalnadan, the Vigilance Court in Thiruvananthapuram has dismissed his petition demanding an inquiry against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his daughter T Veena. Congress leaders including Kuzhalnadan sought a direct inquiry by the vigilance court into his allegations concerning Exalogic Solutions Private Limited. ALL over the world, the 70th anniversary of the battle of Dien Bien Phu is being celebrated on May 7. Dien Bien Phu in Vietnam witnessed one of the greatest battles of the 20th century. Beginning on March 13, 1954, the 55-day siege of the French fortified garrison in a valley in the north-western part in the Vietnam near the Laos border became an epic battle between the Communist-led People's Army (Vietminh) and the French colonial army.
