AIRBEA Holds 31st Conference

THE All India Reserve Bank Employees Association (AIRBEA) held its 31st conference in Kolkata on December 6 to 8, 2013. It was almost half a century ago, in 1966, when an AIRBEA conference was last held in Kolkata. The host unit rose to the occasion magnificently and extended to the delegates and guests a warm and cordial reception and hospitality. Apart from aesthetic decorations and illumination, it organised fascinating cultural presentations which won the hearts of one and all.

T P Chandrashekaran case

AFTER more than one and a half year long much hyped investigation to trap CPI(M) leaders in the T P Chandrashekaran murder case, the UDF government has suffered an excruciating set back as the trial court exonerated 24 accused including CPI(M) Kozhikode district secretariat member P Mohanan on January 22.

SFI Leader Brutally Killed

SFI leader Saifuddin Mollah was brutally murdered in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas district on 19th January. Saifuddin, a post graduate student, was the president of Baruipur 2 rural local committee of SFI and was returning to his home in Sitakundu Bazar from a public meeting addressed by Suryakanta Mishra, the leader of opposition in the West Bengal assembly. He was forcibly kidnapped by Trinamool Congress goons and taken to a secluded place. He was mercilessly beaten, the entire body showed signs of savage torture.

Syria after Three Years of War

FINALLY, there seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel in Syria. The Geneva 11 peace talks are in all likelihood finally going to be held from January 22 to 25. More than 30 countries, including India, have been invited to attend the peace talks. The Syrian government and the opposition, which is under American pressure to attend, will be holding direct talks that will be chaired by the UN special envoy, Lakhdar Brahimi.

ICDS Workers & Beneficiaries to jointly Fight against ‘ICDS Mission’

IN a unique demonstration of unity, the workers employed in the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) of the Government of India and the beneficiaries of ICDS have decided to jointly fight against its privatisation in the name of ‘ICDS Mission’. The beneficiaries of the scheme are women and children mostly from poor families of agricultural workers, peasants and unorganised sector workers.

AAP Kya Hai: Make Clear

DELHI chief minister's dharna attracted widespread attention. Some have termed this dharna as an example of 'mobocracy' and said lawmakers should not come out protesting on the streets. A petition was filed in the Supreme Court against the dharna, stating that the chief minister had violated the constitution, on which he had taken an oath. For the AAP, chief minister sitting on a dharna is its way of combining 'politics with activism' and one of the means to strengthen democracy.

GSLV success: Indian Space Programme Comes of Age

SCIENTISTS and engineers at ISRO, and people all over India, heaved a huge sigh of relief and cheered loudly, at the successful launch on January 5 of the GSLV D5 rocket with an indigenous cryogenic engine and the accurate insertion of the 2 tonne GSAT-14 satellite into geo-synchronous orbit. The notes of triumph and release from tension were palpable at Sriharikota, and the ISRO team would be forgiven for any hyperbole that might have crept into their self-congratulatory speeches.

On Wealth and Income Inequalities

In any society, wealth inequality is always greater than income inequality; but if this income inequality is curtailed, then that ipso facto has the effect of curtailing wealth inequality as well, and that too quite substantially.
