Saudi Monarchy: Spewing Petrodollars & Bombs

YEMEN, among the poorest countries in the Arab world has been subjected to unprovoked aggression by its wealthier neighbour, Saudi Arabia since the last week of March. The Saudi Kingdom has assembled an alliance that includes all the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states barring the honourable exception of Oman. The other non GCC monarchies in the region like Jordan and Morocco have been participating in cowardly air raids targeting heavily populated Yemeni cities. A Moroccan F-16 fighter jet was shot down over Yemen in the first week of May.

MAHARASHTRA: Fifty Thousand Participate in August Campaign

The meeting of the CPI(M) Maharashtra state committee held on June 27-28, 2015, chalked out the programme of the Party’s August campaign highlighting agrarian distress and directed against the anti-people, pro-corporate, corrupt and communal policies of the Modi-led BJP regime and the BJP-SS regime in the state. It also planned for the success of the September 2 all India Strike. CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury and central secretariat member Nilotpal Basu attended the meeting. The five main decisions taken were as follows:

August Campaign in Haryana

AT the call of the Central Committee, the August campaign was conducted successfully in the state. The state committee meeting held on July 9-10, discussed in detail and planned for the campaign that began from July 25. Meetings of district committes/ district organising committees, local and area committees were organised. Party centre highlighted the issues through demands and prepared the material to be used for propaganda in the campaign. A special bulletin ‘Sangharsh Sandesh’ was published by the state centre. 5000 copies were published and distributed.

Undemocratic Move by the BJP led Govt

THE Haryana state secretariat of the CPI(M) in a statement issued on August 22, has demanded immediate withdrawal of Haryana government ordinance providing for educational qualifications and other conditions for contesting panchayat elections in view of the stay order granted by the High Court. If the BJP led government still insists on its undemocratic move it would be presumed that it wants to defer the holding of elections.

SYRIZA – The Party That Was and Is

SYRIZA, which literally means, 'coalition of the radical Left', broke, with 25 of its members of parliament and a section of the central committee, coming out to form another platform called the 'Popular Unity'. This move in fact, had immediately followed after Alexis Tsipras, the prime minister of Greece and leader of the Syriza, resigned and recommended for immediate elections.

AIAWU Plans Demonstration before Parliament against Anti-Poor Policies

THE All India Agricultural Workers’ Union General Council, which met at the Mazdoor Kisan Bhavan in Jaipur on 17-18 August, has called on the agricultural workers to demonstrate before Parliament during the upcoming winter session to protest against the anti-poor and anti-rural policies of the BJP government at the Centre. In preparation to the demonstration before Parliament, the council decided to carry out an extended outreach programme to contact at least one million agricultural workers across the country.

SFI-DYFI Organise Protest at FTII

THE Students' Federation of India, SFI and Democratic Youth Federation of India, DYFI have jointly organised a massive rally to the Film and Television Institute of India, FTII, Pune on August 23 in solidarity with the ongoing struggle by the students against the appointment of Gajendra Chauhan as the chairman of the governing council of the institution. The march was followed by a human chain set up in front of the FTII and a vibrant public meeting.

Jute Growers’ Convention Held in Kolkata

ON the call of the All India Kisan Council to organise crop-wise movement, a jute growers’ convention was held on August 15 at the West Bengal state Krishak Samity office in Kolkata. A total of 33 delegates from jute-growing states, such as West Bengal, Bihar and Assam, attended the convention. Delegates from Andhra Pradesh could not attend the meet. Madan Ghosh, vice-president of AIKS, presided over the convention, and AIKS state secretary Nripen Choudhoury and general secretary Hannan Mollah attended the convention. Mollah introduced the subject and explained the AIKS decision.

Handicraft Workers Union: Revive Handicrafts & Support Impoverished Artisans

KASHMIR Handicraft Workers and Artisans Union held a day long convention at Srinagar on August 25 in which hundreds of workers and artisans participated. Participants were very enthusiastic and there was a sizable number of women workers and artisans.
