The Dramatic Rise in Wealth Inequality

OXFAM has just produced a report in which it highlights the dramatic increase in wealth inequality that is occurring in India. The basic data it uses are from Credit Suisse which regularly brings out a Global Wealth Databook; and according to Credit Suisse the top 1 per cent of the population in India cornered 73 per cent of the additional wealth generated in the year 2017.This is an incredible figure in itself. What is more, this percentage, which refers to the latest year, is higher than the overall figure that had prevailed prior to this year, which was 58 per cent.

DELHI: Symposium on the Relevance of Savitri Bai Phule’s ideas in Present Time

THE Dalit Shoshan Mukti Manch, NCR Committee organised a symposium on the relevance of Savitri Bai Phule’s ideas in the present time on January 7, at its office 44, Ashok Road, New Delhi. The symposium was attended by 150 people. Savitri Bai Phule was born on January 3, 1831 in Nayagaon village which falls under Pune district of Maharashtra. Commemorating the birth anniversary of the first woman teacher of India, DSMM organised this symposium.The main speaker was Dr Subhash Chandra, professor at Hindi Department of Kurukshetra University, Haryana.

DELHI: CPI(M) Condemns ECI Decision

THE Delhi state committee of CPI(M), in a statement issued on January 20, has strongly condemned the decision of the Election Commission of disqualifying 20 AAP MLA’s on the issue of “office of profit” and sent for the approval to the President office. The decision is unfortunate and has never happened in the electoral history of India. Several such cases from the state of Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh are pending before the ECI but the commission has not shown any interest to resolve these matters in the above mentioned cases. THE Centre of Indian Trade Unions, in a statement issued on January 21, has expressed shock and grief at the incident of fire in a plastic factory in Bawana industrial area in North Delhi, on January 20, where 17 workers were charred to death. Many more workers got burn injuries and are under treatment. It is feared that the death toll may increase further.
