Women’s Safety & the Sangh Parivar: A Comment

THIS week Kiran Bedi joined the Delhi BJP as its star campaigner, and declared in the first very statement that in Delhi “women’s safety is the main issue and not Statehood”. She said that if she wins elections than she would ensure that there was better policing including community policing in order to ensure women’s safety. Almost immediately in response to this, Sharmishtha Mukherjee, the Congress candidate from Greater Kailash, stated that the main issue for her constituency is women’s safety and she would use her MLA funds to do community policing if she won.

CPI(M) Ernakulam Dist Conference Held

THE three day Ernakulam district conference of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), held at the historic town of Thripunithura, from January 13 –15, was a grand success. CPI(M) state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan who inaugurated the conference criticised the United Democratic Front(UDF) government’s decision to withdraw the case registered against Kerala Students Union(KSU) activists for pouring used engine oil on an IAS officer. Pinarayi said the action would make the government officials insecure.

Andaman & Nicobar State Conference of CPI (M) Held

THE ninth state conference of the CPI(M), Andaman and Nicobar unit held in Port Blair on January 4, has decided to re-activate the Party in the islands and intensify the fight against the anti-people policies of the BJP-led government at the centre. The conference was held at the Shaheed Bhavan, the CPI(M) state committee office, in Port Blair.
