COP22 at Marrakech: Uphill for the Third World in the post-Paris Era - II

AS has been noted in the first part of this note, the emission reduction commitments made by the developed countries in the Paris Agreement are nowhere near enough to guarantee that global temperature increase will stay below 2 deg C over pre-industrial levels. At the same time, the agreement puts enormous pressure on the development of Third World nations (bar China of course) in terms of the energy options that are available to them at reasonable cost. But the story does not end there.

15th CONFERENCE OF CITU: Unite the Working Class and Intensify Struggles

THE 15th conference of CITU concluded in Puri on November 30 with great enthusiasm and determination to take the united struggles of the working class to newer heights to force a change in the policy trajectory. The conference affirmed that discontent was growing against the impact of the neoliberal policies and people were looking for alternatives. This situation provided opportunities for uniting and mobilising workers on the basis of the alternative policies and intensifying the struggles to achieve these.

Mid-Day Meal Workers Padav at Jantar Mantar

IN early November, Jantar Mantar, a place which silently witnessed several historic struggles, was swarmed with women from the most oppressed sections. These women, who feed millions of school children through the government’s Mid-Day Meal (MDM) scheme, live in utter poverty. Their appearance gave away their social and economic distress. Majority of them are single women, deserted, divorcees and widows.

Women Home-based Workers and Demonetisation

IN recent times, the prime minister of India has repeatedly termed the critics of demonetisation as backers of black money who work against the nation. The argument implies that all those who have cash income, even though legally acquired, are offenders who would have escaped had the government given more time to them to ‘prepare’. This aggressive campaign of the government has one fundamental flaw: it assumes that the only losers from the demonetization are the money hoarders not the mass of the labouring poor whose entire survival depends on wages paid in cash.

ON December 1, the main thoroughfares and bazars at Dumka reverberated with slogans against the amendments to  Chhotanagpur and Santhal Pargana Tenancy acts introduced by the BJP government in the state. A strong rally of 2000 people comprising  tribals and other poor farmers at the call of Adivasi Adhikar Manch and Kisan Sabha, Jharkhand committees. This colourful protest rally started from Gandhi Maidan and culminated into a mass meeting at Commissioners Office. It was addressed by Brinda Karat, Polit Bureau member.

Demonetisation and Banks’ Lending Rates

SPOKESMEN of the ruling party are busy these days spreading another falsehood, namely that, because of demonetisation which has brought in huge amounts of cash to their coffers, banks would be so keen to lend that their lending rates are going to fall, and that such a fall will act as a stimulus for the economy. This is completely wrong, and banks’ lending rates can never fall for this reason. They may of course fall because the monetary policy announced by the Reserve Bank of India is so altered as to cause such a fall.
