Lawyers March to ‘Save Constitution’
LAWYERS of Delhi took out a march from Supreme Court to Parliament Street on November 26, on the slogan "save constitution" under the banner of Lawyers for Democracy. Various lawyers' organisations representing dalits, minorities, human rights and civil liberties and the All India Lawyers Union came together to celebrate the Constitution Day in a unique manner by taking out a march. Issues like save democracy, save democratic institutions, save secularism, stope mob lynching, stop attacks on dalits, stop attacks on minorities, ensure women's rights etc were highlighted. At Parliament Street, a meeting was held which was presided over by Som Dutta Sharma, general secretary of the All India Lawyers Union who is also the convener of Lawyers for Democracy. The meeting was addressed by Anil Chauhan, president of All India Lawyers Union (Delhi unit), Madan Lal Kalkal, coordinator of All India SC & ST Lawyers Welfare Organisation, Imran Alam, president of AMU Advocates Forum and other representatives of Dr Ambedkar Birth Celebration Committee, Jai Bheem Advocates Group, Lawyers for Democracy and Justice, PUCL, National Human Rights Organisation Pragatisheel Mahila Sangathan (lawyers unit) Dr Ambedkar Adhivakta Sangh.
All Speakers at the meeting gave a call to unite lawyers to fight against attacks on democratic rights and democratic institutions, attacks on dalits, minorities and women, organise resistance against mob lynching and interference of executive in the independence of judiciary. This march was unique because for the first time, lawyers from such a wide spectrum, came together for a cause like ‘save constitution’.
