The RSS and Politics of Tribal Identity

THE results of the Tripura elections have revealed the unholy nexus between conservative tribal identity politics and the RSS led Sangh Parivar. The results show that the Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) won 8 out the 9 seats it contested in alliance with the BJP. Out of the 20 Scheduled Tribe seats in the state, 18 were won by the BJP-IPFT alliance. In addition to this, the BJP and the RSS effectively used the regional ‘tribal parties’ in Meghalaya and Nagaland to expand its political domination of the region.

Special March 8

HEY, sister, where are you going so early?Where else, of course to mobilise for the International Women’s Day! This year it is going to be special. It seems some of them were saying that without the government, we will not be able to organise the Women’s Day. It seems our days are over and we should stop mobilising. All this has to be proven wrong. We should show that we are not like others, who keep on crying over our loss and lock ourselves in the house. After all, what is it today? It is the WOMEN’S DAY. It teaches us to keep on fighting and never give up.Have you heard it?

Our Generation

INTOXICATED by the ‘ideology of hate’, BJP goons in Tripura ‘celebrated’ their victory by letting loose a reign of terror. Not only have they started attacking the members and supporters of the CPI(M), they burnt their houses, Party offices and other belongings. Razing down the statue of Lenin was one of their brazen acts. The governor of the state, an RSS pracharak, condoned the incident, his glee getting the better over his sense of constitutional propriety. It seems a diplomat, exceeding his brief, congratulated expressing the desire to see a world with ‘few communists’.
