MORE than a thousand citizens of Mumbai gathered at a public meeting held at Azad Maidan, Mumbai, on August 20, to protest against and call for an immediate end to the Genocide being perpetrated by Israel at Gaza. With bombing, shooting of civilians and food and water blockade of Gaza, a programme of ethnic cleansing of Palestinians is in progress at Gaza. The permanent occupation of Gaza is the stated aim of the Israeli regime. The International Criminal Court has indicted the prime minister of Israel, Netanyahu and the defence minister, Gallant for war crimes and genocide.
THE 13th state conference of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), Rajasthan committee, was held from August 15-17, at Gangashahar in Bikaner. The venue was named as Kamla Chaudhary Manch, Harish Bhadani Hall, Comrade Shyopat Singh Makkasar Nagar. The programme opened with state president Kamala Meghwal hoisting the flag, followed by floral tributes at the martyrs’ column.
THE Delhi Union of Journalists (DUJ), in a statement issued on August 25, expressed shock at the rough treatment given to a Lallantop reporter and cameraperson by Delhi police at Ramlila Maidan on August 24, 2025. They were covering a protest by students from around the country alleging irregularities in the selection process of the Staff Service Commission. The police not only stopped the journalists from reporting, they also confiscated their aadhaar cards, mobiles, camera and microphone and forced them into a police van.
A state camp of party secretaries of CPI(M) was held at Solapur from August 22-24, 2025. It was attended by 293 comrades, including 26 women, from 25 districts. The comrades comprised district, tehsil, town, and area Party secretaries and selected branch secretaries from each district. The first five districts were Solapur (75), Thane-Palghar (62), Ahilyanagar (25), Nanded (19) and Mumbai (15).
THE “Voter Adhikar Yatra,” launched under the leadership of the Mahagathbandhan on August 17 from Sasaram, with Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav as its most visible faces, has traversed a long road from the southwest corner to the northeast corner of Araria, turning into a mass movement.As a participant in the yatra representing the CPI(M), I had never witnessed such enthusiasm for a democratic cause – saving the right to vote.The inaugural rally in Sasaram on August 17 saw massive participation from people of all ages.
THE Election Commission of India has started the process for Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across the country, starting with Bihar. The Assam state committee of CPI(M), in a statement issued on August 25, 2025, said that under present conditions, such hurried revision – on the Bihar model – will not produce an accurate voters’ list. On the contrary, many genuine citizens risk exclusion.In Bihar, due to the Commission’s biased and partisan role, around 65 lakh names were arbitrarily deleted from the draft list of approximately 8 crore voters.
ON August 23-24, 2025, more than 500 women from across India gathered at Surjeet Bhawan in New Delhi to tell their stories of debt, despair, and defiance. The ‘National Public Hearing on Women’s Rising Indebtedness and Micro Finance Institutions (MFI) Loot’, organised by the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), became a platform where the silent burden of loans, harassment by MFIs, and the failure of public banks erupted into a collective cry for justice. It was not just another programme.
THE Polavaram National Project, touted as a “lifeline” for Andhra Pradesh, has over the years led to the large-scale displacement of thousands of families across the Godavari basin. While successive governments have promised rehabilitation, the displaced continue to live in misery –many in leaking houses, unfinished colonies, or even makeshift huts.
ON August 20, 2025, the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025, was introduced in the Lok Sabha. Similar amendments have been proposed to the laws that govern the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Puducherry as well. Following their introduction, the bills were referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee for scrutiny.Being constitution amendment bills, they would require a two-thirds majority in both houses of the Parliament for their passage. However, it is very clear that the BJP nor the NDA have the required numbers at present.
