HP: Red Volunteers in Action

DURING the outbreak of the second wave of dreadful pandemic COVID-19, when the government of Himachal Pradesh imposed lockdown/curfew in the state and people were forced to live in their homes statewide, nothing was easy to access them, facing a lot of difficulties in their day to day life, in that eventuality it was a team of “red volunteers” of CPI(M) local committee that intervened and launched an awareness campaign and helping the needy and distressed.

Lighthouses of Maharashtra: A Landmark Online Public Lecture Series

THE CPI(M) Maharashtra state committee conducted a 21 day online public lecture series called “Maharashtrache Deepastambh” (Lighthouses of Maharashtra) that started on May 5, 2021 to mark the Karl Marx birth anniversary, and also May Day and Maharashtra Day on May 1. It was based on leading social and political thinkers and figures of Maharashtra, who had played a major role in the social reform movement, the anti-imperialist freedom struggle, the Samyukta Maharashtra movement and the worker-peasant movement towards socialism.

AIDWA Remembers Its Founder Leaders Ranjana Nirula & Mythily Sivaraman

THE All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) lost two of its founding leaders, Ranjana Nirula and Mythily Sivaraman on May 10 and May 30, 2021 respectively, due to Covid-related complications. Their lives spanned over fifty years of activism each in the communist movement. The AIDWA CEC recently organised separate online memorial meetings to pay homage to them. Both the meetings were very inspirational and also very well attended.

Tripura: Resisting BJP Violence to Reclaim Democratic Rights

DESPOTIC attacks on democratic rights and the right to protect individual lives and properties have been going on unabated in the BJP-ruled Tripura.

* Leader of the Opposition Manik Sarkar, accompanied by party leaders, was prevented from a scheduled visit to Santirbazar on May 10.
* A blood donation camp organised by Left youth at Khowai on May 12 was stopped.
* Large scale ransacking and looting of at least 19 houses of CPI(M) leaders and workers at Badharghat under Agartala Municipal Corporation on May 29 and 30.

New Committee Set-up to Delay Action on Minimum Wages: CITU

THE Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU) called out the government for dilly-dallying the process of fixation of minimum wages by constituting a new expert committee on wages, instead of acting upon the recommendations made by the old expert committee in 2019.

The CITU, in a statement issued on June 4, has said that the purpose of constituting the new committee is to keep the much needed minimum wage revision hanging for the sake of  ‘ease of doing business’ rankings; and to provide berths to chosen persons in government committees for a long period of three years.

CPI(M) Questions Govt Intent Behind MNREGA Advisory

THE union minister for rural development and panchayati raj, Narender Singh Tomar, sent an advisory to state governments on March 2 to ensure social categorisation of workers working under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA). The CPI(M), questioning the necessity of the move, objected to the advisory on “disbursement of wage payment to wage seekers according to the category of SC/ ST and Others” under the MGNREGS, and said that it could lead to unequal budgetary allocations to the SC, ST sections.

UP: Panchayat polls: Death of 1,621 Teachers due to Covid

FORCED to be on duty during the Panchayat polls in Uttar Pradesh, Kalyani, a teacher who was eight months pregnant, was killed by an arrogant administration that overlooked her pleas for a leave. Kalyani, a 27year-old woman from Jaunpur, was called for election duty on April 9 even though she was pregnant. Her husband Deepak submitted a leave application for her which was not accepted. She went for training on April 14, where it was announced that cases will be filed against those who do not attend their election duties.
