RICH tributes were paid to Comrades Rama Krishna, Vishnuvardhan Reddy and Balaswamy, on the 20th anniversary of the Martyrs Day of the Electricity movement, on August 28.  The three were brutally killed by the then Telugu Desam Party government, which hiked electricity charges heavily and was vehemently implementing the World Bank dictates by putting a burden of Rs1,000 crore on the people of the united Andhra Pradesh.

THE number of Covid-19 cases in Tripura has been touching record high every passing day. The total number of cases stood at 9,820 on August 24 and the death toll from the disease was 78. Similarly, the number of active patients is also rising and reaching a scale where it will be difficult to provide a hospital bed to all patients.

THE pandemic and the lockdown imposed by the Modi government has led to an unprecedented collapse of economic activities and a severe contraction of the economy. Steep hike in unemployment is the most obvious manifestation of this reality. Instead of taking measures to address this catastrophic situation, let alone arresting this havoc, there is indulgence in gimmicks.

AS many as 51,500 workers from 23 sectors have lost income in the last four months, only in the town of Eluru of West Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh, since the imposition of Covid-19 lockdown. According to the urban survey conducted by the CPI(M) in the town, it is estimated that an additional 20,000 weavers, fishermen, tailors, artisans and self employed people have also lost their livelihoods during the pandemic making it tougher to keep their heads above water with each passing day.
