Cyclone Fani: Declare National Calamity

ODISHA is reeling under one of the worst cyclones since the Super Cyclone of 1999. The Fani Cyclone that hit the Odisha Coast wreaked havoc and unprecedented destruction of houses, crops, trees, electricity poles and also took the lives of around 70 people. More than 14 million people are estimated to have been affected in a region spread over 16,000 villages. Standing paddy crop, coconut trees, cashew trees and various other crops on 1,52,000 hectares are estimated to have been destroyed. Livestock has also faced the brunt with many animals reported killed.

Tripura: Repoll: People Vote Despite Terror

AS people in 59 Lok Sabha seats across the country voted to elect their candidates, a repoll in 168 booths of West Tripura parliamentary seat went off without much uproar in the mainstream media. However, it demanded a national headline or at least a place in the front pages of the national media. Reasons for this are simple and they deserve mentioning. Cyclone Fani Wreaks Havoc in Odisha

SUPER cyclone Fani formed in the Bay of Bengal stormed Odisha on May 3 as it hit the land near Puri town and damaged the 480 km long coast and the nearby areas of the state, from Ganjam to Balasore districts. The ravaging cyclone smashed Puri town, capital city Bhubaneswar, urban centres and villages, of 14 out of 30 districts of Odisha.The wind gusting at more than 200 km per hour devastated buildings, telephone and electrical erections at some places and blew off the thatched and asbestos roofs in towns and villages.

CPI(M) worker from West Bengal, Comrade Sk Kamrul, was killed and five others were grievously injured after members of Trinamool Congress (TMC) assaulted them at Khandaghosh in East Burdwan district on May 5. TELANGANA: Protests Over Discrepancies in Intermediate Results

CONTROVERSY erupted after the Intermediate exam results in Telangana were declared on April 18. The success rate of first-year students was 60.5 per cent and second-year students 64.8 per cent. Girls outshone boys in the examinations. The success rate was increasing every year, whereas this year it has fallen compared to last year. This has raised doubts in the minds of the students, parents and intellectuals, and they questioned the authenticity of the results.Many discrepancies occurred in the results. Thousands of students are in a state of confusion.
