Huge Rally of Workers, Peasants in Guwahati

GUWAHATI, the capital city of Assam, witnessed a huge rally of workers and peasants on February 26. The rally was organised jointly by the Assam state committees of CITU and AIKS against the anti-worker and anti-peasant policies and the politics of communal divide pursued by the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in the state. In Assam, soon after coming to power, the BJP government unleashed a massive eviction drive of the peasantry and other sections of the working people from ‘khas’, railway, VGR/PGR land.

Cong Routed, BJP Tastes Victory with Help of AGP & BPF

THE 2016 Assembly election ousted the Congress from power in Assam. The Tarun Gogoi-led dispensation was in power for three successive terms since 2001. Bringing an end to the 15-year Congress rule, the BJP, with the help of alliance partners AGP and BPF, came to power with comfortable majority. In the 126-member Assembly, the BJP and its allies have won 86 seats, while the Congress managed to win only 26 seats. A majority of political observers and analysts predicted a hung Assembly.

ASSAM: Assembly Elections: Close Fight between Congress & BJP

IN this assembly election 2016, Assam has registered highest ever polling percentage in its electoral history. The overall poll percentage has been recorded at 84.72 percent. While the first phase recorded 82.72 percent voter turnout, the second and final phase held on April 11 witnessed record breaking 87.03 percent voters exercising their franchise.In fact, Assam had set a state record in 2014 Lok Sabha elections with a voter turnout of 80.08 percent. In the last assembly elections in 2011, 76.05 percent electorate had cast their votes.

Assam: Manik Sarkar Addresses 5 Rallies in Support of CPI(M) Candidates

TRIPURA Chief Minister and CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Manik Sarkar addressed five huge rallies in Lower Assam on April 3 and 4 in support of party candidates from Bijni, Abhayapuri North, Sorbhog, Nalbari and Rangia Assembly constituencies. While top leaders of bourgeoisie parties such as BJP and Congress were travelling to places in helicopters to address rallies, Sarkar, despite being a Chief Minister, went for election campaign by travelling in trains which found some space in otherwise anti-Left electronic media.

ASSAM: CPI(M) is Working Hard to Regain Sorbhog Assembly Seat

 IN the political landscape of Assam, Sorbhog Assembly Constituency occupies a special place. This is the only Assembly seat in Assam which enjoys the distinction  of  electing   CPI (M) candidates  as many as five times. In 1978, party won the seat for the first time when party leader Hemen Das was elected with a huge majority. Later, the party retained the seat in 1983 amidst the violence of Assam Movement.

The sprawling and picturesque bank of the mighty Brahmaputra River, where the rally was held, turned red and was crowded by about fifteen thousand people who came from different corners of the state. It was an inspiring spectacle of the fighting unity of the toiling and democratic people irrespective of language, religion and caste in a state which is otherwise plagued by activities of divisive and communal forces.

Natun Sahitya Parishad Holds its 16th Biennial Conference

THE 16th biennial conference of Natun Sahitya Parishad, a progressive literary organisation of Assam, was held from January 8 to 10 at Manikpur in Bongaigaon district. The conference upheld the view of democratic consciousness and human values with the main slogan of confronting neo-liberal economic policies and the sinister design of casteism and communalism by literary activities.

Assam’s First State-Level Convention of Jute Cultivators Held

ON the initiative of the Assam State Kisan Sabha, the first ever state-level convention of jute cultivators was held in Kolgachia of Barpeta on December 13-14, 2015. The convention began with an open rally on December 13, which was attended by around three thousand people including a large number of jute cultivators. The greater Kolgachia area was once a flourishing place for jute cultivation as the landmass is conducive for the crop. However, the cultivators are not getting remunerative prices any more and many of them have switched over to other crops.
