Assam: First State-Level Convention of Vegetable Growers Held

THE Assam state unit of All India Kisan Sabha successfully organised the first ever state-level convention of vegetable growers at Sarbhog in Barpeta district, which is known for large-scale cultivation of vegetables by small and marginal farmers. The two-day convention was held on November 21-22 in the historic Gandhi Hall of Sarbhog. The convention ended with a massive rally of around five thousand peasants on November 22.The surrounding area of Sarbhog, popularly known as Barnagar area, is a hub of vegetable cultivation in the state.

Rising Farmer Suicides: Massive Dharna in Guwahati

THE Assam State Kishan Sabha organised a massive dharna in Guwahati on November 19 against the state and central governments over growing peasant suicides in the state. "Not suicides and self-annihilations, but united mighty struggle against the anti-peasant and anti-people policies of the BJP government at the Centre and Congress government in the state is the only way to lift the peasantry out of the present crisis" was the central slogan that reverberated in the massive dharna at Lakhidhar Bora Khetra in the heart of the city.

Assam: CPI(M) Opposes Centre’s Move on Bangladeshi Migrants

THE CPI(M) Assam State Committee has strongly objected to the Modi government’s unilateral and arbitrary move to grant Indian citizenship to all Hindu refugees from Pakistan and Bangladesh. The Party said the decision, taken on communal considerations without taking into consideration the people of Assam and various political parties and organisations, has made provisions of the Assam Accord completely irrelevant and meaningless and will endanger the unity and integrity of Assam.

Left Parties’ ‘Satyagraha’ in Assam: Thousands Arrested across State

SIX Left parties -- the CPI(M), CPI, CPI(ML), SUCI(C), RSP and the AIFB -- jointly organised massive protest actions in the form of 'satyagraha' throughout Assam on July 6. The 'satyagraha' was in protest against the anti-people policies of the BJP-led central government and the misrule of the Congress dispensation in Assam. Hundreds of Left activists and supporters came out to the street and organised processions, demonstrations, etc. by defying law and finally courted arrest in front of the offices of deputy commissioners and sub-divisional officers in their respective areas.

Assam Killings: Govt’s Failure Evident

THE CPI(M) Assam state committee has strongly condemned the barbaric killing of innocent people by terrorists belonging to the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Songbijit) in Sonitpur and Kokrajhar districts of the state on December 23. This incident has proved that the state government led by chief minister Tarun Gogoi has once again failed miserably in tackling the terrorist activities and protecting the lives and properties of the people.

Organisational Workshop of AIKS Assam Unit Held

AS part of birth centenary celebrations of Comrade Achintya Bhattacharyya (AB), the Assam unit of All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) held a state-level organisational workshop at Thelamara in Sonitpur district on August 24 and 25. As many as 130 delegates from different districts of the state took part in the workshop.A public meeting marked the beginning of the two-day workshop on the afternoon of August 24. Despite heavy rains, people in large numbers attended the rally, which was presided over by Sonitpur district unit president of AIKS Kiran Dutta.

The Carnage and Outrage in Assam's BTAD

THE Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD) in lower Assam which had witnessed carnage over the years have, once again, been transformed into a killing zone since May 1 last. The memories of the 2008 ethnic and communal clashes in Darrang-Udalguri districts and the gruesome incidents of the 2012 July-August riots in Kokrajhar-Chirang-Baksa districts within BTAD are still fresh in the minds of the people. The 2012 riots left over 100 dead and 4.85 lakh displaced, some of whom even today live in refugee camps.
