The Historic Journey of the Communist Party of China

Forging Ahead to Build a Modern Prosperous Society

THE third session of the Eleventh Central Committee of the CPC held in December 1978 was historic. This meeting took many important decisions to correct Left deviations and it embarked upon the task of putting the Party back on the correct path, both politically and organisationally. The CPC decided that socialist construction in China would be according to 'Chinese characteristics', built on the initial advances made after the formation of the PRC.

Socialist Construction While Struggling with Deviations

THE formation of Peoples' Republic of China heralded a new era in human history as the most populous country in the world embarked upon construction of socialism. The country was confronted with enormous financial and economic difficulties. Agricultural and industrial productivity remained low.The CPC enacted a series of measures to eliminate all kinds of oppression. The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) led by the CPC confiscated around 80 per cent of the country’s total industrial fixed assets and established State-owned enterprises. Land reforms were implemented.

March towards People’s Democratic Revolution

JAPAN invaded China in 1932. The CPC gave a call for putting an end to the civil war and resisting this aggression, which was well received by all sections of the people. The KMT ignored this call and continued its war against CPC stating that Japan’s occupation can be addressed later. Japan tried to mobilise all anti-communist forces in its favour and proposed ‘joint defence of Japan and China against communism’.Influenced by Left sectarianism, CPC initially called people to unite and fight both the Japanese invasion and also Chiang Kai-shek.
