DURING the second week of Budget Session both the houses witnessed disruptions over the issue of Indian journalist meeting the terror mastermind Hafiz-Saeed. On this, the external affairs minister made a statement condemning the meeting and said the government had sought a report on the engagements of the journalist in Pakistan during his three week stay there.

IN the beginning of the budget session on July 7, 2014, there was a pandemonium in both the houses. Opposition MPs stormed the well of both the houses protesting against many issues, including increase in prices of essential commodities and petroleum products, rail fare hike, and the ordinance relating to the Andhra Pradesh Re-organisation Bill.

LEADER of the CPI(M) group in Rajya Sabha, Sitaram Yechury has written to the Speaker of Lok Sabha regarding the outrageous remarks made by Trinamool Congress MP, Tapas Paul on July 3.  The letter noted that Tapas Pal, MP in the 16th Lok Sabha from Trinamool Congress had made a highly objectionable statement publicly in a gathering at his constituency Krishnanagar "If anyone from the Opposition dares to touch any women then I will send my boys and get women of CPI(M) raped." He also says that he roams around with 'maal' (revolver) and will not hesitate to use it on his opponents.

IN the new Lok Sabha, the government, led by the BJP, has a comfortable majority --- 281of the BJP on its own and 336 of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) as a whole --- while the Congress has only 44 out of the 543 elected.
As soon as the parliament session started on June 4, 2014, it had to be adjourned after paying homage to Gopinath Munde. Munde, a prominent BJP leader who was appointed the union rural development minister, died in a road accident on June 3, 2014.

THE WEEK IN PARLIAMENT

ON the very first day of the extended winter session of parliament, starting February 5, there was uproar in both the houses on various issues. In Rajya Sabha, the government brought the Prevention of Communal Violence (Access to Justice and Reparation) Bill 2014 for consideration; it could replace the Communal Violence (Prevention, Control and Rehabilitation of Victims) Bill 2005, which the union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde withdrew. But the CPI(M) and other opposition parties forced the government to defer the bill.
