US Democracy Summit: Devil Singing Hymns

THE two day virtual Democracy Summit organised by the United States (December 9-10) began with Joe Biden’s admission that democracy is on a decline in the US along with various other countries. Apart from this candid admission, there is no effort made to look into the reasons for this decline and own up responsibility. Of course one cannot expect it, because the very idea of the summit stems from the purpose ‘to act’ and export their flawed model of democracy, ‘push back on authoritarianism, fight corruption, promote and protect human rights’.

Remove J&K and Ladakh High Court Chief Justice from Office

CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury wrote a letter to Ram Nath Kovind, president of India, on December 16, bring to his notice a very serious complaint against Pankaj Mithal, the chief justice of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, who has violated his oath and compromised the constitutional office held by him.Mithal addressed a programme organised by an organisation affiliated to the RSS on December 5, 2021 at Jammu and spoke against the Constitution of India.It has been widely reported in the media that Mithal addressed a seminar organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Adhivakta Parish

UP: CPI(M) demands anImpartial Inquiry in Gohri Incident

A HEART-RENDING incident of the murder of four persons belonging to a dalit community in Allahabad shocked the residents of the region. The incident took place in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj, where the bodies of a 50-year-old man, his 45-year-old wife, 16-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son were found in their house.The incident took place in Gohri village. According to media reports the police said that the family was attacked with a sharp weapon and that there were serious injuries on their bodies.

Booster Shots and Omicron: Many Questions

THERE is much discussion these days on whether to introduce booster shots in India, both generally in response to the Covid pandemic and in the specific context of the Omicron variant of the virus. So far, recommendations for boosters by many experts are being made based on very thin evidence about effectiveness of boosters for protection against infection or transmission and, importantly, against serious disease, hospitalisation and death, which are the primary objectives of vaccination programmes.

7000 MW Solar Power from SECI Questionable & Detrimental

National Conventions of Transport Workers

THE All India Road Transport Workers’ Federation (AIRTWF) had organised national conventions of workers in state transport undertakings (STUs) and in private transport separately on December 9th and 10th in Delhi. The conventions discussed the conditions in STUs and the entire transport sector. Both the conventions unanimously demanded the central government to negotiate with the trade unions and adopt suitable policy decisions to save the industry and to resolve the issues faced by the workers.
