COMRADE Sitaram Yechury passed away on September 12, 2024, at AIIMS, New Delhi. It is still very difficult to reconcile with this shocking happening. His untimely demise is a great loss, not only to the country and the communist movement, but also to the broader movement of toiling people.This piece is not intended to evaluate the contributions of Comrade Sitaram or the leading role he played in people's movements and national politics – that is a collective task.

The First Left President of Sri Lanka

ANURA Kumara Dissanayake, leader of the Janata Vimukti Perumana (JVP) and the National Peoples’ Power (an alliance of Left and progressive parties) won the presidential elections held on September 21 in Sri Lanka. He polled 57,40,179 votes (42.3 per cent) in these elections, which is a significant increase from the 4,18,553 votes (3.16 per cent) he could obtain in 2019.

His work remains unfinished as his passing away was both premature and untimely. Yechury still had much to offer to the communist movement in India and his unexpected departure has deprived the next generation of his invaluable guidance.Sitaram Yechury was one of the most outstanding and versatile leaders of the communist movement in his time. He had a mastery over Marxism and Leninism and a solid ideological foundation.
