Chhattisgarh:CPI(M) State Conference Resolves to Strengthen Organisation and Movement

THE Eighth Chhattisgarh State Conference of CPI(M) was held on December 19-20, 2024 in in Vishrampur, a coal-belt area in the tribal region of Surajpur district. The venue was named as Sitaram Yechury Nagar and Buddhadeb Bhattacharya-Basudev Acharya Manch. The conference began with the hoisting of the Party flag by Gajendra Jha, the oldest delegate at 83 years of age, followed by floral tributes at the martyr's column.The conference was presided over by a three-member presidium comprising Rishi Gupta, S C Bhattacharya, and R V Bharati.

Trump’s Threat of a Tariff Wall

DONALD Trump is threatening to use tariffs as a weapon against other countries. He has already made three threatening statements: first, he threatened the BRICS countries that if they dared to move away from the dollar, then they would have to face 100 per cent tariff in the US market. Second, he has threatened the European Union that unless the EU bought more American oil and gas as a means of reducing its trade surplus vis-à-vis the US (the surplus on goods trade was $208.7 billion in 2023), it would face high tariffs in the US market.

The Week in Parliament

 BOTH Houses of Parliament were adjourned sine die on December 20 amid protests by MPs of the Opposition bloc over Union Home Minister Amit Shah's remarks on B R Ambedkar and other issues. Before the Houses were adjourned, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Tuesday introduced the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024 and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024 – the two Bills for the conduct of the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections simultaneously – in the Lok Sabha. The Bills saw intense debate in the House, with 269 members voting in its favour and 198 members opposed.

The Shudders that Rumble Through French Colonialism

MAYOTTE, just north of Madagascar, has been part of the overseas French empire since 1843, continues to exist as an ‘overseas territory’ despite the irresistible anti-colonial hunger. France, apart from most of the other European colonial powers, continues to hold large parts of the world under its dominion (from French Guiana in South America to New Caledonia in the Southwest Pacific Ocean. Farmers Mobilise against Corporate Control of Agriculture

National Convention on Safety in Railways

THE Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) organised a national convention on ‘Safety in Indian Railways’ on December 20, 2024 at HKS Surjeet Bhawan, New Delhi. More than 200 CITU activists and cadres from 16 states along with several members of railway unions participated in the convention, which was held as per the decision of the CITU general council held in Kolkata in August 2024.The national convention was presided over by Hemalata, President, CITU.
