THE division of Andhra Pradesh into two states -- Telangana and Andhra Pradesh -- will happen formally on June 2. Therefore elections to state assembly and Lok Sabha are taking place in the undivided state of Andhra Pradesh itself. But that is only technical in sense. Politically the electoral scene is markedly different in both the regions. If Congress party is vying for power in Telangana region, it is battling for life in Seemandhra region (the area comprising residual Andhra Pradesh), hardly able to find candidates to field on its behalf.
FROM April 12 to 20, enthusiastic rallies and public meetings were held by the CPI(M) in all the four Lok Sabha seats that it is contesting in Maharashtra, viz Hingoli, Nashik, Dindori (ST) and Palghar (ST). THE Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) expresses its deep grief at the death of Comrade K L Bajaj, member of the Central Committee of the party and a veteran trade union leader of Maharashtra. Aged 78, Bajaj died after a short illness in Mumbai today.
Comrade Bajaj joined public life through the Revolutionary Communist Party of India. He joined the CPI(M) in 1964. Bajaj had participated in the movement for the liberation of Goa from Portuguese occupation and was arrested.
THE formal announcement by the Malaysian prime minister, Najib Razak, that the Malaysian Airlines Flight MH 370 has in all likelihood crashed in the Indian Ocean south of the Australian city of Perth, will not bring immediate closure to the grief and anger that the incident has left in its wake. The Malaysian government has based its conclusions on the new satellite data provided by the British company Inmarsat that has conclusively shown the last position of the plane in the southern Indian Ocean.

TEN days after his discharge from a hospital in Mexico City, Gabriel García Márquez, one of the greatest writers of our times, died on April 17, 2014 at the age of 87. Author of classic works such as One Hundred Years of Solitude, Love in the Times of Cholera, No One Writes to the Colonel, The Autumn of the Patriarch and Chronicle of a Death Foretold, he created the eternal and marvelous Macondo which, in the imagination of millions of his readers, became synonymous with Latin America.
We are reproducing below a slightly edited article by Comrade M Basavapunnaiah that appeared in a special issue of People’s Democracy commemorating the birth centenary of V I Lenin (April 22, 1970). This is being done both as a tribute to Comrade MB’s understanding of the Leninst tactics and for the importance of these being based on concrete analysis of concrete conditions.
