THIRTY Nine years ago, on this very day in 1975, as we go to press today, “Internal Emergency’ was declared by the then Congress party government at the centre headed by late Indira Gandhi. As the sun rose that day, thousands of people were arrested and jailed, thus, heralding the darkest chapter in the history of democracy in independent India. It was only after a relentless struggle by the people of our country that this emergency regime was defeated in an election that Ms Gandhi was forced to call in early 1977.
THE Left Front’s 72 hour sit-in demonstration started on June 29 afternoon in Kolkata protesting against the ruthless attack on democratic rights in the state. Thousands gathered in the initial rally braving rains. The sit-in continued uninterrupted through the night with leaders of Left Front including Biman Basu staying on the road.
IN the new Lok Sabha, the government, led by the BJP, has a comfortable majority --- 281of the BJP on its own and 336 of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) as a whole --- while the Congress has only 44 out of the 543 elected.
As soon as the parliament session started on June 4, 2014, it had to be adjourned after paying homage to Gopinath Munde. Munde, a prominent BJP leader who was appointed the union rural development minister, died in a road accident on June 3, 2014.

SPEARHEADING a statewide struggle for proper implementation of the Right to Education (RTE) Act 2009 and against the commercialisation of education, and particularly school education in the state of Tamilnadu, the Students Federation of India (SFI) organised a statewide school students' protest strike on June 18.
THE Midday Meal Workers Union (CITU) organised on June 4 a state level convention of midday meal workers in Desh Bhagat Yadgar Hall of Jalandhar (Punjab). Over 800 midday meal workers from every corner of the state participated in the convention that turned to be a big success. Harpal Kaur (Barnala), Charanjeet Kaur (Boparai) and Jasmel Kaur (Sangrur) jointly chaired the convention.
THE Tripura state committee of the CPI(M) has appealed to the masses to ensure a huge victory of the Left Front in the ensuing elections to the three tier panchayati raj bodies; these polls are scheduled to be held on July 15. A resolution to this effect was adopted in the recently concluded meeting of the CPI(M) state committee on June 14.
