Urban Air Pollution: Will Delhi Even Out the Odds?

THE short and temporary experiment in Delhi to combat severe air pollution by rationing road-use by personal four-wheeled vehicles on alternate days, corresponding to odd or even numbered dates and license plates, is to end this weekend. The media especially newspapers, who for once have taken good advantage of their greater ability than TV for in-depth coverage, have been full of analysis of whether the odd-even formula has worked or not.

THE state and central governments have betrayed the youth and shattered their expectations, said M B Rajesh, all India president of the Democratic Youth Federation of India.Addressing the 15th state conference of DYFI Tamil Nadu at Dindigul on January 3, he said that 43,000 government jobs were abolished across the country in the last three months. DELHI: CPI(M) Delegation Meets LG

A SEVEN member delegation of CPI(M), Delhi state committee, led by Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat met the lieutenant governor of Delhi on January 14. The delegation comprising Delhi secretary KM Tiwari, South District secretary Jagdish Chand Sharma, Pappu Bhardwaj, Farooq Khan, Swaran Singh and Nanu Prasad raised issues related to Badarpur region. These include removing the stay on declaring Mithapur and Jaitpur wards as ‘F’ zone instead of the ‘O’ zone of Delhi’s Master Plan. The delegation urged upon the LG to reverse this decision.

People Serve Notice to CBI in Chit Fund Investigation

THOUSANDS of people demanding speedy investigation and punishment of the culprits in the chit fund scam in West Bengal, mobilised and held a sit-in, in front of the CBI eastern zonal office at Salt Lake on January 12.  They seized the office for hours and demanded interrogation of the chief minister who herself is involved in the scam.This demonstration, at the call of Left Front has been organised after a visible delay in the CBI investigation into the Saradha scam.

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement on January 14, 2016.

THE Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) condemns the politically motivated Congress-led UDF government’s move in approaching the Kerala High Court for an early hearing of the revision petition on allegations against CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Pinarayi Vijayan in the Lavalin case.

Economy in Trouble

THAT the economy is in trouble is seen by two figures which have come out. The first is the index of industrial production which contracted by 3.2 percent in November 2015 and the second is the retail price index which registered a 5.61 increase in December.  The industrial output figure is cause for worry as the manufacturing sector within this index has declined by 4.4 percent.  Capital goods sector has declined by 24 percent, a clear indication that investment is not forthcoming.
