CPI(M) Condemns the Arrest of Youth and Student Protesters

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement on October 2, 2026

THE Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) condemns the detention of hundreds of youth and students who had gathered at Jantar Mantar, Delhi, today demanding the immediate ouster of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, who was instrumental in converting the ECI into a back office of the BJP’s election work.

Tripura: Left Front Holds Ground despite Repression in Tripura ADC Village Polls

Despite attacks, intimidation, threats and attempts to prevent the Left Front from contesting, the CPI(M)-led Left Front has registered a significant increase in its vote share in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) village committee elections. The results have also exposed the limitations of the ruling BJP and its allies in expanding their support base, even after contesting the polls jointly.

A DELEGATION of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) visited Enkoor village in Bhalki taluk of Bidar district on October 1, 2026, and conducted a detailed study of the developments surrounding the submission of Form 7 objections under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The visit brought several facts to light.

The delegation comprised Comrade K. Neela, State Secretariat member of the CPI(M), and Comrades Shashikant Dange, Prabhu Santoshkar and Gausoddin, all members of the Bidar District Organising Committee of the party.

Neoliberalism and Limits of Democracy

It seems to be a paradox that Indian democracy faces its biggest crisis when the economy is recording the highest growth rate in the world. Enough is Enough

THE independent constitutional authority, Election Commission of India, tasked to conduct free and fair elections, today stands like the naked Emperor. Since the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) was launched on June 24, 2025, for Bihar, it was clear that it was not intended to clean up the electoral rolls. It had no precedent contrary to what was claimed by the ECI nor was it backed by any formal decision nor based on any due diligence to hold the exercise across the nation as was made out during launch.

The Specificity of Neo-fascism

GEORGI DIMITROV, the outstanding Bulgarian Communist leader who had presided over the Seventh Congress of the Comintern and piloted the tactics of United Front to fight fascism, had earlier been an accused in the Reichstag Fire case and imprisoned by the Nazis after they had come to power in Germany in 1933. Dimitrov had rejected the offer of a lawyer provided by the Court and had defended himself during the trial. In his defence he had wanted to cross examine Herman Goering, top Nazi leader and Hitler’s war minister, and his request had been granted by the Court.

The Siege of Public Space and the Right to Dissent

On 2 October 2026, activists and leaders of opposition parties and mass organisations demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, following the Indian Express exposé, were detained and not even allowed to assemble at Jantar Mantar, the designated protest site in the national capital. The permission raj of Delhi Police became the pretext of these detentions.

The Travails of Being Mineral-Rich

WITHIN a globally capitalist setting, for a country or even a region of the Global South, to be mineral-rich can be a source of great hardship for its people. It is ironic that the global North which is the home base of capitalism has been historically mineral-poor. This is as true of the pioneering country of industrial capitalism, Britain, as it is of Japan, the sole Asian member of the global North.
