Neoliberalism and Unemployment

WHENEVER the unemployment problem is under discussion a common response is that overcoming it requires an even higher GDP growth rate than we have been having. This completely misses the point. Unemployment is the manifestation of certain social relations; unemployment will continue to grow, no matter how high the rate of growth of GDP within those social relations.

The Week in Parliament

THIS was the last session of the 16TH Lok Sabha. The 16TH Lok Sabha was constituted on May 18, 2014 and the House met on June 4, 2014. In all, the House had 331 sittings. On February 13, 2019, both Houses of Parliament – the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha – were adjourned sine die.The Rajya Sabha on the last day of the session passed the Personal Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2018 by voice vote and it was later passed in the Lok Sabha too. The bill removes leprosy as a ground for divorce under five personal laws, including the Hindu Marriage Act.

Condemn Terrorist Attacks in Jammu & Kashmir

CPI(M)  Polit Bureau has issued the following statement on February 14THE Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) strongly condemns the terrorist attack mounted on a CRPF convoy in Pulwama in Jammu & Kashmir.  So far over 20 CRPF personnel have been reportedly killed in this attack while over another 40 are injured. Violence is not the answer to resolve issues which require the engagement of all stakeholders in the state.  The Modi government had promised, three years ago, to initiate a political process involving all stakeholders through a dialogue. This has not happened. 

Stop Attacks on Kashmiri People

CPI(M) Polit Bureau has issued the following statement on February 17THE CPI(M) expresses serious concern at the attacks on students and people belonging to Kashmir which have taken place in different parts of the country. Students were beaten up in Dehradun by Bajrang Dal and VHP men.Threats and attacks on Kashmiri students and traders have occurred in other places too. Jammu is under curfew after attacks on Kashmiri residents there.It is natural that people are aggrieved and saddened by the killing of the 40 CRPF jawans in Pulwama.

Meanwhile in Tripura

SFI Bookstall Vandalised and Closed DownIN a fascist like diktat, the ICA department, government of Tripura, the organiser of the 37th Agartala Book Fair has ordered to close down the stall allotted in the fair to Chhatra Sangbad, the organ of SFI Tripura state committee. This unprecedented and gagging order was issued on February 19, on the fifth day of the book fair.

MAHARASHTRA: Second Kisan Long March of AIKS

NEARLY a year after the first Kisan Long March from March 6 to 12, 2018, the AIKS Maharashtra state council held at Nashik on February 4, 2019, took the major decision of launching a second massive Kisan Long March in defence of the rights of the peasantry. This long march, which will begin from Nashik on February 20, the martyrdom anniversary of Comrade Govind Pansare, will culminate in Mumbai on February 27, the martyrdom anniversary of Chandrashekhar Azad.
