Onwards with the September Campaign

THE Central Committee of the CPI(M) has called for a mass campaign throughout the country on the major issues facing the people like price rise, unemployment, livelihood of farmers and agricultural workers, against privatisation and attacks on the working class and the overall onslaught on democracy and democratic rights by the Modi government.This campaign from September 14-24 will concentrate on taking these issues to the people and the demands and alternative policies required to solve these problems.

Why This Silence on Unemployment, Mr Modi?

The jobless rate crossed 8 per cent yet again, and youth unemployment is raging uncheckedTHERE is a deafening silence on the part of the government, and its voluble leaders, on unemployment. Not even ritual claims or promises are being made – one would think that India has no jobs crisis! Yet the relentless rate of unemployment, especially among youth, continues to devastate families. In August this year, unemployment once again crossed the 8 per cent mark hitting the highest level in the past year.

Why Lok Ayukta Amendment?

THE Kerala Assembly has passed the Lok Ayukta Amendment Bill after detailed discussions. The assembly came to the general point of view that the bill has constitutional and legal validity. This bill has been formulated as per the provisions of the Central Lokpal Act and the State Lok Ayukta Model Bill by upholding the provisions of the constitution. As per the Lok Ayukta Act, this system will be responsible for investigations and inspections.

SKM National Meet Calls for Intensifying Struggles

THE national meeting of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) was held in New Delhi on September 4, 2022. The earlier meeting was held two months ago at Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, on July 3. The meeting was presided over by Tajinder Singh Virk, Rakesh Tikait and Ruldu Singh. It was conducted by Hannan Mollah, Darshan Pal and Joginder Singh Ugrahan.Over 250 leaders of farmers’ organisations across India attended this meeting.

Deshabhimani at 80 Years

ON September 6, 2022, Deshabhimani celebrated its 80th anniversary. Deshabhimani was begun on September 6, 1942, as a weekly. Later on, it was on  January 18, 1946 that Deshabhimani began publishing as a daily.Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated Deshabhimani’s anniversary celebrations on September 6, at Kozhikode, where its first edition was published. Malayalam’s favourite story writer M T Vasudevan Nair was the chief guest. Several dignitaries from multiple walks of life participated in the celebrations.

First Quarter GDP Estimates for 2022-23

THE estimates of Gross Domestic Product for the April-June quarter released by the government on August 31 paint a dismal picture of the Indian economy. Since the GDP in real terms (at 2011-12 prices) shows an increase of 13.5 per cent over the first quarter GDP a year ago, and since 13.5 per cent appears an impressive figure, official spokespersons have been putting a cheerful gloss over it.
