Socio Economic and Caste Census (SECC): Confusion on Landlessness in Kerala & West Bengal

THE Socio Economic and Caste Census (SECC) was carried out between June 30, 2011 and December 31, 2011 by the ministry of rural development, government of India. The three stated objectives of this Census were to enable state governments to prepare below poverty line (BPL) lists, to arrive at a caste-wise enumeration of the population, and to ascertain the socio-economic and educational status of the enumerated castes.

Dalit Youth Tortured in Custody Dies

A YOUNG Dalit youth who was subjected to a severe third degree torture in lockup by the Kerala police and as a result had underwent an eleven day long painful treatment, has passed away on July 11. P V Sibi (39), a head load worker from Marangattupilly village of Kottayam district was the new victim of custodial torture. Sibi was taken into custody for an alleged reason of drinking alcohol in public place. Sibi is survived by wife Priya and three children.

Pushkar Tragedy – A Monumental Failure of the State Govt

ICWA to Observe Harkishan Singh Surjeet Birth Centenary on July 25

THE Indo Canadian Workers Association of Canada held a public meeting in Surrey, Canada on June 21. This public meeting was to remember and pay tributes to the Victims of 1985 Air India flight no 182 bombing and two baggage handlers at Tokyo Airport.

Surinder Sangha, the president of ICWA and Jinny Sims, MP were the main speakers. It was a full hall meeting. Several members from the victims family came to attend and shared their emotional feelings who have been waiting for justice even after 30 years.

Yechury Visits London

SITARAM Yechury, general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) visited London to attend a series of meetings organised there. On July 11, he attended two meetings organised by the Association of Indian Communists and Indian Workers Association, Great Britain. On the 12th he took part in the public reception organised by these two associations in collaboration with Friends of CPI and other Left democratic organisations. He took part in many other programmes and solidarity events organised by the supporters of the CPI(M) and the Left during the course of his visit to the UK.

Seminar on Life & Philosophy of Commandante Che Guevara

ON July 10, Friends of Latin America – India, organised a seminar at State Youth Centre, Moulali in Kolkata titled “Celebrating the Life and Philosophy of Commandante Che Guevara” on the occasion of Che Guevara’s 87th birth anniversary. Secretary of Friends of America – India, Suman Putatunda, started the programme by mentioning the prominent thinker and intellectual Jean-Paul Satre’s famous comment on Che that he is not only a great revolutionary but also the most complete human being.

TN Farmers Demand Scrapping of Land Bill

THE Tamil Nadu Vivasayikal Sangam has gathered the signatures of nearly six lakh farmers in the state against the NDA government's anti-people land acquisition bill. The Sangam also held protest rallies across the state during June in which around 50,000 farmers took part and supported the agitation against the bill. T K Rangarajan, MP and Central Committee member of the CPI(M), who led the rally in Tuticorin, said that the BJP-led government promulgated the land ordinance for the third time and it was condemnable.

Kisans Prepared to Fight against Agrarian Crisis

THE All India Kisan Council met at Wardha to discuss the deep agrarian crisis and the necessary struggles of the peasantry to counter it. Reports from several states, presented before the Council, have confirmed the ground reality and the impact of the crisis on the life of rural people.
